HMRC Tax Refund

I've had a text from HMRC stating that my tax refund is being processed and will be sent in the post within the next 6 weeks but no further details.

I've checked my 24-25 details and I paid £8091 in tax, when I compare this to the HMRC calculator for the same annual salary it looks like I should have paid £7514.

Does this mean that the refund could be as much as £577?

Are you sure it was a genuine text? I’ve had scam ones like this!

Yeah it was genuine, it was from the same text account I receive other HMRC updates from. It's a verified account

It looks pretty genuine to me OP and I’m very hyper vigilant about potential scams! I would just sit back and wait and see, try not to spend it in your head before it arrives and assume it will be a lovely surprise if it does! I remember one year having more than £1,500 refunded in tax, best thing ever 😂

Ive had this text, it would be nice to finally see the money. Ive been owed it since jan 2024. Ive requested it about 4 times online. Its only £200ish so not a huge amount but annoying that they havent paid it yet

To be completely sure just log onto your Gov.uk account and check it there.
I have never looked at the tax calculator so can't comment.

Even PAYE can be incorrect and refunds are soon made.
I (early) retired a couple of years ago but HMRC calculated the tax on my pension incorrectly, the following tax year I was given a refund of £3k.
I received a text message/email (can't remember which) but instead of replying I just logged onto my account where the message was confirmed. Entered my bank details and the refund was paid within a week.

Thank you. I have logged into my account but it says the 24-25 annual tax calculation is in progress which is frustrating 😂

We know you paid £8,091 income tax, so you are questioning whether the £7,514 is correct to generate the refund of £577.

So I think your numbers are:
Salary £51,705
Income Tax 7,514
Student loan/ Pension £3,858
Made up of:
Net Pay Arrangement pension contribution £1,551 (maybe?)
Plan 1 student loan £2,308 (maybe?)
National Insurance £3,045
Take home £37,287

This is how I get the tax back to £7,514...

If that's what you entered, then yes, the refund looks roughly correct.
