What's the difference between a gold/platinum and standard credit card?

Some come with additional benefits such as free travel cover etc. Otherwise it's usually just for show!

often you may find a clause saying you must earn a certain amount to qualify nut nowadays it dont really matter

agree with galaxy. generally they're an invention by banks to kid customers into thinking they're important, and to kid them into thinking that by flashing a gold or platinum card other people will be impressed. yawn.

franch - not really - there's usually a minimum salary but it ain't much.

OK - thanks all. The platinum card I'm looking at has a slightly better APR so I guess maybe you do have to earn more or something. Not sure I qualify for either in fact - see my "regular income" thread .....
