Child benefit backdated

Kaylajayne91 · 21/07/2025 15:18

Hello,
My son is 4 and I wasn’t aware we were entitled to child benefit until my friend said about it the other day.
I submitted a claim on 30th June and it backdates for 3 months so I assumed I would get this soon and get 3 months worth. However, I have just seen that it could take up to 4th September to get anything,
Will I get 3 months from 30th June plus then the 2 months between 1st July to September? Or does it not work like that.
Thanks

They are saying to me that I can't get more than 3 months even though I submitted a claim in December - which wasn't looked at until mid April due to their delays.

That’s madness isn’t it!
thanks for getting back to me x

I think it’s the case that it can be backdated from date of claim, assuming you were eligible at that stage, though what @HelenHywatersays seems not to go along with this so perhaps I’m wrong! I claimed for my 6 year old for the first ever recently having not been eligible due to now ex partner’s high salary and ours was backdated to before the claim date (though for transparency the whole period of backdating plus claim being check and paid was about 2 months - April to June).

@herethereandeverywhatnow I am arguing with them over this, and they have promised to look at it. I phoned them on Thursday and they said they'd phone me back within 48 hours. (They haven't). I said it really doesn't seem fair to stick to the 3 months when it's their delay that's caused the claim to go back further than 3 months. Let's see what they say.

I wonder if there’s been some misunderstanding here as the government website says it can be backdated for up to 3 months from the date you make the claim. I would wait and see what is awarded and appeal if it’s not backdated correctly.

You shoukd get 3 months backdated from 30th June plus whatever you are owed by the time it is processed.

They paid me from the end of April but hopefully they're wrong!

Thanks everyone!! I’ll see what happens x

Really hope you get it backdated. Like you say, it’s unfair when it’s their issue they have a delay! Everything crossed for you x

If you do not get a response that backdates 3months prior to your claim date, contact your MP. You shouldn let lose 3months due to their delays, when it clearly says 3onths from application date, not processing date.
