Council Tax Benefit question......

FAQ · 21/05/2008 17:35

after initially telling me I couldn't get CTB they've now decided that I can - and I've been awarded it from the 10th of March - now I've already paid approx £144 from then until now - so what will happen to the money that I've paid??

They might send you a cheque or if the benefit isn't the full amount take it off each of the 10 payments.

They will take it off your recallculated yearly amount and then tell you the new monthly amount - at least thats what my local authority does.

FAQ · 21/05/2008 17:45

it's the full amount I've been awarded - which I was quite about as I wasn't expecting to get awarded the full amount.

Write to the council tax department asking for it to be refunded.

They should check your benefit entitlement and then send you a cheque for the amount you're in credit.

Oh well they should send you a cheque for the whole amount you have over paid then. What lovely news, hope you treat yourself to something nice

oooo - goody - that's a doubly nice surprise - £60 a month better off, and money that I should get back too

You will need to ask for it to be refunded because if they're anything like the department I worked in they won't offer it if they don't have to.

ok I'll leave it a few days before getting onto them - only got the award letter in the post this morning - so I may hear about a refund in the next few days - they're generally pretty good as we've discovered in the past (I seem to recall we'd over paid a few years back and we got a refund without asking.....)
