PREMIUM BONDS JUNE ONWARDS

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/05/2025 23:28

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff

PB have been about since 1957

Been 30yrs (April 2024) since a million was then the highest prize

nsandi-corporate.com/news-research/news/30-years-premium-bonds-ps1-million-jackpots#

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 so means 25 chances to win every purchase - years ago you could buy £1 at a time.

Odds of winning £1 million on Premium Bonds at face value are 1 in 2,489,469,818 if you have £25 in PBs.

However most people have more than £25 so the odds depend on how much you do hold.

If you have £100 the odds in any given month are 1 in 49,563,028

£1,000 in PB the odds are 1 in 4,954,991

£50,000 in PB the odds are 1 in 96,839

To win anything odds are 1 in 22000

So providing you have more than £100 you have better odds than winning the lottery 😄

And obviously far better than the lottery - you don’t lose your stake !!!!!!

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

This means they will go into the next months draw without losing a month

Or sent to named bank account if winnings take over FH /want winnings in bank account

More info here

www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

Martin Lewis’s opinion on pb - quite an interesting read

https://www.saga.co.uk/money-news/premium-bonds

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to then hoping win thousands to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

We've seen over the years £100 holding win a million (March 25) also a £100 win £100k and £50 win £25k and even £1 won £10k

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /few thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1925 in prizes

If have £5k average luck is £175 winnings a year

Obviously some people have better 'luck' than others and some worse - Ie full holdings and not winning anything a month or two or even longer

PB odds calculator below

moneymarvel.co.uk/calculators/premium-bonds/

Or this one is quite good as shows the interest rate of the winnings - obv anything over 4% is good as if in an account you wouid be taxed so be more like 3%)

In August 2023, NS&I hiked the prize fund to a 24-year high of 4.65 per cent from 4 per cent, a level not seen since 1999 🙀🙀🙀🙀

But it has been steadily falling since, and of April 2025, the prize fund rate - the amount of the total fund paid out in prizes - is 3.8 %

https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/cost-of-living/nsi-premium-bonds-rate-changes-31317737

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 1/22000 can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,925

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

To work out your own personal % rate

Take your total prizes, divide it by the number of months and x by 12.

Then divide that figure into your total holding and x 100.

So say £500 prizes in 6 months / 6 x 12 = £1000.

Holdings £30,000 = 1000/30000 x 100 = 3.33% interest rate.

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 4% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So anything over 3% in winnings is considered good.

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything so that they will def earn x amount of interest

But then lose the what if won a million or £100k

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

There are 2 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

Blue - the app its self works but the showing early often doesn't work for me but those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

Seems the higher the winnings the earlier it shows and can be from 6pm the night before the app shows

And to confuse things I have a White app that is a bookmark - which shows info/list 😄😄😄

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out if going to get a visit from AM 😂

The two winners of the £1million prizes will be contacted by Agent Million (AM) 😂😂 the day before the first working day of the corresponding month.

There may however be exceptions to this, such as when the first working day of the month is a bank holiday, for example.

So

Day before first working day - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Day after first working day , including weekends - cream app showing all winnings

You can also check to see if have won via this link with your holders number

www.nsandi.com/prize-checker

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

NS&I Premium Bonds rate changes as expert warns of more cuts

National Savings and Investments said that the lowering was being made in response 'to changes in the savings market'

Happy this month i won £675 on fh and dh won £125 on just under 45k. a nice little boost as next month will be our last draw with substantial holdings as our 5yr fix rate ends so the majority will go towards paying it off, its split in two as 1 was when we took money out for an extension total is about 92k but we're not sure if we will pay it all or keep a small mortgage for a few more years for credit rating purposes and to keep a bit of cash. I'm hoping for the million next month 😂

ZoeyBartlett · 03/06/2025 10:31

£75 on FH. Booo

whatisgoingonwithmycareer · 03/06/2025 10:33

Not a sausage on either the £20k I bought at the end of January, which has never won anything at all yet, or DS's £7k, which won £75 last month. Just gone up to FH for next time.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/06/2025 10:33

Nothing for me. See it does happen some months that my lucky streak stops

so that means july HAS to be my month 😂

Mindymomo · 03/06/2025 06:55

I checked the high winners yesterday and saw one which number and value that could have been my DH, and this morning clicked on to see he has won £5,125 with £40,000 holding, we took £10,000 out to put in ISA last month. Myself I only won £25 whereas I normally do better.

Really pleased this month.

And second place to you @Mindymomo. Well done

£150 here on FH

I keep a track of winning bonds on a spreadsheet (sad, I know)

The £50 winning bond number has won before!!
I don’t track dates so I don’t know when.
Had them for about 10 years

marsal · 03/06/2025 10:42

£150 for me on full holdings and £125 for DH on £30k. Fine but so far we are definitely running at average prize winnings that are a fair bit lower than we would get in savings interest even after the tax. We might move the cash instead

BuyingButterAndSatinSandals · 03/06/2025 10:54

That is a lot of sausages for @mumof3teens and @Mindymomo 's DH - congratulations!

Stirabout · 03/06/2025 10:59

Congratulations to all the winners especially @mumof3teens i dare say those teens will spend that quickly 😁

No win here but you are all keeping my enthusiasm going.!

flosset · 03/06/2025 11:16

I won £25 on 4.2k. my first ever win lol

PrioritisePleasure24 · 03/06/2025 11:38

Me 4.3k No win ( fourth month in a row)
I tend to win two times a year ish and that happened jan/feb😂

Partner: FH No win… he did really well
last year but has won maybe £250 so far this year and two no wins.

mechanicalpencil · 03/06/2025 12:13

Congratulations @mumof3teens !!!!!!!!!!

mechanicalpencil · 03/06/2025 12:14

So, finally my dry spell ended, after 6 months of nothing on £16k, won £50!
I am very pleased.

Well Done to all the winners and don't lose hope if you didn't win anything this month, there's always next month!

Cowhen · 03/06/2025 12:16

575 for DH on about 35k holdings! More than delighted with that.

We pulled most of mine out last month to put into ISAs, so 0 on my 2,500.

PremiumPrizesPlease · 03/06/2025 12:41

Hi all I had lost you there! Another £175 this month so it's a trickle rather than a flood but better than nothing. I just reinvest my winnings each month plus add £250 each month by standing order. I live in hope of a bigger prize!

RoseBliss · 03/06/2025 12:50

Oh wow congratulations @mumof3teens and @Mindymomo ! Enjoy spending your prizes!

Another disappointing month here except to say that I beat DH for the second month running 🤣

DH £100 on FH

Me £125 on FH

Cakeybake · 03/06/2025 12:51

£150 for me on 35K holding, nothing for DH. We tend to win something small every month between us which keeps it interesting!

TubeScreamer · 03/06/2025 12:52

Third month in a row of fuck all on FH.

LadyLucksalot · 03/06/2025 12:56

Well! I don't have full holdings yet, but each month I always have a lovely surprise. This morning, quite early, I checked and it showed me exactly the same as last month - ie no win. I just logged in again to double check, because I couldn't quite believe that this was my first month without a win, only to discover I've won £300!

Thrilled! Thank you Ernie!

strangeandfamiliar · 03/06/2025 13:00

£200 for me and £25 for DH, both on FH. Not nothing, but not amazing. DH's return this year's been rubbish, with loads of 'no prize' months. It usually tends to even itself out over the year, but we've only 3 more draws til we cash all of his in, so they'd better get their skates on!

Wrapunzel · 03/06/2025 13:01

Congratulations @mumof3teens and @Mindymomo brilliant news!
£75 across three £25 prizes for my family on £36k (£32k is in my name and all prizes on my bonds)
£500 for my DM on FH single prize

Whyherewego · 03/06/2025 13:03

£50 on FH but I got around £300 last month so can't complain

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 03/06/2025 13:30

Ah @LadyLucksalot , I just logged back in to recheck but still nada for me!

Thanks for an additional minutes hope though!

sunshinemakesmehappyx · 03/06/2025 13:33

How do you work out a rough interest % on winnings for your savings? X

MercyChant66 · 03/06/2025 13:40

Some lovely big amounts this month - congratulations to the lucky winners in our team! I can't get my head around the maths of it all - people with very low holdings seem to frequently win much, more than some (like me) on full holdings. It's like having a whole handful of raffle tickets but never winning the prize. I would expect to have the odd fallow month or a £50 here and there but I consistently win nothing or the bare minimum. I'm on 0.4% return at the moment but I'm reluctant to cash in yet as I keep feeling that surely, there must be a win in sight!
