Meter not working

i am with octopus and now I’ve got to get a smart meter as the one I’ve got has stopped working. It hasn’t worked for over a month and the meter is being replaced in 2 weeks. How do they work out what to bill me? Are they going to try it on?

Is it the actual meter that’s broken or just the screen bit where you see what you’ve used?

Haven't got a clue but wonder if they'll base it on historical readings.

How did you read your meters before you got your smart meter? It’s usually a meter with a mechanical counter on it in a cupboard somewhere - is that still working?

basically the numbers don’t move and I realised when my reading was the same as the previous month. It’s a meter on the outside of the house and now they are installing a smart meter to replace it but I want to know how they work out what I’ve used and if they’re likely to try it on with what they charge

If they've been unable to meter your usage, the only thing they can realistically do is either ask you to pay a month's typical usage if they have sufficient records of your consumption, or waive that period entirely.
