Hi!

I need to pay to change my driving license name and you have to pay the fee via cheque or postal order.
Can my husband use his cheque book to pay it or will they not accept that?
i don’t have a cheque book to use.

thanks

You only need to pay if you want a new photo too. It's crazy those are the only payment options! I would presume the cheque from your DH would be fine, but I don't actually know, so hope others can help.

Bjorkdidit · 25/04/2025 20:30

Can you not pay by card?

Cheepcheepcheep · 25/04/2025 20:31

Oh I wanted to make a cancel the cheque joke but it doesn’t really work :(

That sounds bonkers though, I can’t imagine any system in the UK now that would limit to cheque or postal order? Feels v 1980s.

dementedpixie · 25/04/2025 20:36

You only need to pay if you're updating your photo too. Yes a cheque from your husband will be fine

NewsdeskJC · 25/04/2025 20:45

Huh? Do you have to fax the application form as well? A postal order???

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 25/04/2025 20:57

My DD had this, she has never had a cheque book, I was able to track mine down, blow away the dust and cobwebs and write the cheque for her. No issue with it being from a different name to the licence.

i can’t understand why only cheque payment is accepted, it is the only one I have written or received for over 5 years

Smurphy99 · 25/04/2025 21:00

Went through the exact same deal! had to use my grandfathers as who on earth has a chequebook nowadays! It was absolutely fine. Went through as normal. I think you can use a postal order (whatever that is) instead if it helps.

shoofly · 25/04/2025 21:02

Yes you can use your husbands cheque. I still have a cheque book and have written 3 or 4 cheques for friends for this

Bjorkdidit · 25/04/2025 21:11

So you can't pay by card?

Our driving licence photo cards expire soon and I assume there's a fee for new ones.

We have a cheque book. Somewhere..... but I've honestly not seen or used it for years. Do cheque books expire? Ours must be at least 10 years old. Perhaps the last time we used it was when the cards needed updating last time.

FancyCatSlave · 25/04/2025 21:15

Why didn’t you apply online? I changed the photo on mine when it renewed and it was £14 by card. You just upload it or use the passport one.

The cheque nonsense is only for postal forms.

You can renew online but if there's a change of name or gender then you have to do it by post.

I remember now. Our passports and photocard licences expire at about the same time and if we do one, they can use the new photos to then do the other one.

Which is remarkably joined up for public sector IT.

dementedpixie · 25/04/2025 21:26

If you do the passport first then you can use the passport picture to update the photocard. It doesn't work the other way round
