Council Tax - empty property

Good evening wise MNetters.
My late parent’s property is currently on the market. Probate was granted early November, so coming up to the 6 month mark.
My brother (the executor) has just received a council tax bill for £4,000 which sounds absolutely bloody astronomical to me. It’s only a bungalow, not a mansion! And it’s in Wiltshire, not London/south East 😳
Do you know if the council might be prepared to wait until the property’s sold? I believe they only grant an exemption up to 6 months, which must be running out next month.
Thank you ☺️

Worth asking. I am in Scotland fwiw; I do have a friend who has managed to spin it out for almost 2 years. I think the argument is the length of time it typically takes in the specific location to sell.

So, if properties nearby take a while to sell, it is worth asking.

Is £4000 for the year 25/26

or is this the council tax demand for 24/25?

if the former and annual ask for the demand to be split into 10,11 or 12 payments?

as for not paying, leeway that’ll depend on a few things and how the district councillors have. It’s on stuff

I sold my DM’s property last year and rule was six months post probate and then possibility of extension if property was completely empty. This was Devon. May be worth asking for an extension.

I got 6 months post probate and then a 6 month renewable flag so that I’m not charged the ‘empty home’ multiplier. I need to show its on the market though , so I’m not ‘blocking’ . Apparently if the property was unfurnished I could also have got an additional 1 mth discount and then a long term empty flag , which is renewable every 12 mths . I went for the former as its a lot of hassle to save 1mth payment and I think the property is more likely to sell furnished.
