Do overdrafts get approved on weekends?

Hi

I applied for a small overdraft with HSBC on
my current account last night (will be paid off in a few days!). Last time I applied for one, years ago, it was approved instantly. So I was surprised to see this time that it said it can take two days! Without it, I can’t buy food basically. So does anyone know if they approve them on a weekend? Google and HSBC FAQ don’t help me. Thanks!

They might or might not.

If your'e struggling to put food on the table can you access a food bank?

Oh it’s really not like that - we’re decent earners, but have had urgent house repairs that have taken every penny! So until we get paid this week we’re a bit stuck. So a small overdraft is fine. I just need it quickly.

Sounds like it’s gone to a lending team to make a decision based on your affordability.

the two day timescale could be due to opening hours or items in front of you in the queue.

It’s been referred to the lending team. There will be a small number of them in today, although usually they’d prioritise more urgent lending like mortgages.

If it’s gone to the underwriters, it may not be a definite yes. Does your partner bank with someone else who could see if he’s auto approved? If he is, you should get access to that instantly.

Thank you. I will give them a ring later I think if I haven’t heard. This house and its problems are bleeding us dry!

Do you not have a credit card? If you do but it's maxed out you could maybe get the limit extended?

Doggymummar · 08/03/2025 09:01

You could order food from Amazon and use Amazon pay, I've done that before when skint

OOlivePenderghast · 08/03/2025 09:04

Do what other people suggest but if you need to buy something online (and they have it available) you could use PayPal with direct debit linked to your current account.

We used to cash a cheque at a branch of another bank ahead of pay day knowing my salary would be in the bank before it cleared.

I have one, but our balance is interest free so if we use it, the interest would accrue lots over time. I figured an overdraft for a few days, then pay it straight off is the better option

Good luck finding a branch with counter service on a weekend. They’re rare in the week these days.

Plus cheque cashing isn’t really a thing like that these days.
