Paid water bill in cash - southern water saying I never paid it

Hi everyone.

I need some advice. In October I paid my water bill, £300 in cash through the post office. Since then I have lost the receipt.

I had a letter from southern water today to say they haven’t received the payment. I obviously told them I’ve paid it and they’ve pretty much said “prove it”.

Where do I stand? What do I do?

Do you know what day you paid it? Can you go to the post office and ask them to trace the money.

Without a receipt, you're absolutely stuffed I'm afraid. You could try asking the Post Office if they could check their system for the day in question to see if they could print a duplicate receipt, but in reality, if it was on their system that day that they could print a duplicate receipt, the Water firm would have received the money as it's automated between systems. How did you pay? Did you hand over the payment slip from a bill?

Yes I handed over the payment slip along wit the cash! I’m furious with them for taking so long to tell me but also frustrated with myself for losing the receipt

Yes I’m trying to mentally retrace my steps to remember the day I went in! If I can, I hope they can trace the transaction

If you paid it then the Post Office wouldn't have been able to balance the till at the end of that day. Worth asking them.

Call citizens advice bureau asap, as they wiil be able to point you in the right direction.
