Savings and age

I've become a little bit obsessed with saving over the last few years, partly due to growing up with not much.

Interested in people in their late 20's/early 30s have in savings or what is the goal?

I currently have around 20k in various places, we do have a mortgage which I'm trying to overpay per month too!

NOT a brag, just generally curious in this climate!

I'm going to answer to show you how little a thread like this can offer you 'normal'.

I have around £220k in savings. Most people in my life would never guess that. I'm 32.

I think salary/family 'help'/inheritances can make people feel really behind.

My savings have grown massively in the last 3 years (high earner/lucked out on big bonuses and company shares) but prior to that I was mid-20s and essentially used all my (meagre) savings on childcare to get me through the nursery years! Now I have around £170k all in, but again that's largely due to salary/luck. The only other people I know with savings that high have it due to inheritance (or are also high earners).

If you want an answer that might help you feel better, google it because there's research that breaks down the average savings by age, and if I remember correctly I think you're doing better than most in our age bracket!

I'm 38 and have £9k in personal savings, £180k mortgage and no pension 🫣

I won't have any inheritance either, so I just live each month as it comes.
