anyone ever been DeBanked?

LittleRob · 04/02/2025 00:21

After finding myself the wrong side of a bank, who I've been fighting them for a while.. I spoke to a friend of mine who pointed me here. His exact words " You need to put this on mumsnet, cos that place will have an opinion on what's happened to you... "

So firstly has anyone on here ever been #DeBanked, cos my story should serve as a warning to anyone that is a customer of a high street bank.

post your questions and buckle up for a story that will make your hair turn white... fall out and raise more questions than it anwers

my background I'm a nobody, yet my bank chose to debank me, and sieze all my families money after a near fatal accident... and this could happen to you.

more to follow, it's been a long day and I just introduced myself a few hours ago.

@LittleRob you keep saying you’re meant to be dead .. you’re making it very confusing as you were never ‘dead’ 🤷‍♀️

when doctors say what happened is impossbile... stated by them "you'd just be dead, if that occured, but your clearly not... but we can't explain that either!

Followed up with "why didn't you go to hospital or someone call you an ambulance!"

so perhaps "walking dead" is a better term...? let's not get bogged down with the unexplainable parts.

because I'm debanked and have no access to any of my money, my legal case fails as I can't pay my solicitors and I end up with a 500+K legal bill.

How? Surely you told the solicitors about your banking problem? Did they not offer a conditional fee arrangement?

I struggle to believe that the costs of what sounds like a relatively straightforward claim rose to £500K.

solicitors came via the business insurance, I didn't enter into an agreement with them persay. All the costs where later paid for by the business insurance. took about 10 years after the accident, but that's another story, and is way messier than

one day having a bank account, the next not having a bank account!

I’ve only read the op’s posts, but what’s coming across (eventually) looks to me like he had cash flow issues, expected the bank to increase overdrafts dramatically, they didn’t, he kicked off, they dumped him.

if he communicated with them like he has on here, and (reading between the lines) got argumentative, I don’t really blame them

mate, I’m not sure you’re the victim you think you are here.

fair enough but am I unreasonable to ask for my money back ?

On the face of it no you’re not but given the story and details are so tangled it’s not in any way clear what actually happened and how much, if any, of your actual money “disappeared”. It’s very hard to believe you had net assets that they unilaterally took from you, so I feel there’s more gone on here if I’m honest.

and the accident sounds horrific, all the best with how you’re doing now. Brain injuries can have a huge impact.

Chewbecca · 05/02/2025 14:27

Ok, so they would return the money but wouldn't pay company money into a personal account (which is all you had).
I can see why.
Then it took a year to open a new account in the company name and then the bank transferred the money in the business account to the new business account?

UbiquitousObjects · 05/02/2025 14:28

could not open a new business account, asked for the money to be paid to me. Bank refused said they could only release the money to the named entity on the account
Standard with withheld funds from a Limited Company or Partnership. For obvious reasons, to stop one partner or Director running off with jointly owned money.

then they claimed money did not exist
these requests where made less than a week of me finding myself without access to my accounts

Surely you simply pointed them to the previous conversation less than a week ago and your statements showing the balance?

new banks asked why was I debanked, I was unable to give an answer they declined to open new account
New banks would not know you were 'debanked' unless a CIFAS marker had been registered. CIFAS markers are common when being kicked from a bank for a reasonable belief of fraud or attempted fraud, money laundering or other criminal activities.

Your story is absolutely full of holes.

LittleRob · 05/02/2025 14:43

@Billydavey this is the first time I've tried to write it up, it's been nearly 16 years.

@Chewbecca once the account was frozen/ disappeared/ gone call it what you will. Their claim was no money was in the account, better the account didn't exist at all. this has since been proven as being incorrect, but it's very complex to have a discussion with an organisation that has no client facing people.

the bank admitted to lying but claimed it was a longtime ago....

@UbiquitousObjects well, here we are... I have no idea, I did send in a subject access and got back a heavily redacted document. Which was the first time there was a real document and proof more as yet unseen material existed.

However it's pretty hard to ask for something you don't know what it is. How it was originated or where it sits inside a huge data repository.

first subject access yielded 200 pages
second about 1,000 pages
the last one 8,000 pages

I've now requested this as an electronic document, and have waited several months for a reply.

I've got a hot take.

None of these things happened. You have some kind of skitzophrenia or manic episodes and are of the belief (which isn't too uncommon) that you died, should have died, defied death/the laws of science /god. You didn't get in an ambulance because it didn't happen. There's no proper records because it didn't happen.

You were let go because you had developed severe mental health issues.

The bank closed your accounts (if they even existed in the first place) for similar reasons. And you are now being persecuted by big bank o my in your mind. No money exists to return but because you're very unwell you still believe that there is. You cannot give a reason why you were debanked to the other bank but they can see plainly why.

Everybody is sick of listening to your long incoherent and frankly ridiculous delusions and so you have come on Mumsnet to try to garner sympathy /attention like many other unmedicated people before you.

And what does the SAR show?

If your SAR yielded several thousand pages then I assume this in itself is evidence that you had a relationship with the bank.

Is your Limited Company still active? If not and it's dissolved then any remaining funds would have been forwarded to the GLD (Government Legal Dept, assuming you're in England or Wales) at the point of dissolution anyway. The bank would no longer hold them.

If your company is Dissolved, you need to refer to the Bona Vacantia division of the GLD to discuss your options.

Actually we need to get bogged down with the unexplainable parts because your story is must so obscure, difficult to follow and doesn’t make sense 🤷‍♀️
You keep saying you died … but you didn’t!

GLD thing is interesting, the SAR showed lots of redacted pages the biggest problem it's printed on A5 so can't be read. I reported this as a complaint, information commissioners office, the reply from them was well they sent you something, so they've complied with the act.

Which they can't enforce... and that made me laugh...

You've got it in one......

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 05/02/2025 21:28

What was the outcome from the Ombudsman? And did you agree to their final decision?

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 05/02/2025 21:28

I agreed with the findings and was paid a small amount of compensation by the bank, I made 3 offers to settle this matter as per the recommedation to negotiate... the bank refused to engage...

Ombudsman seems bored and won't review the same complaint twice.. according to them it's dealt with.

their findings are final you've got to love the simple rules we should all abide by

ADR alternative dispute resolution is the way forward the banks solicitor agrees with me, however their client chooses not to engage.

which makes it sounds like an abuse of process.

that would have been so much simpler, sadly the insurance under which the claim was started, would not allow it.

So I was locked into a single path way... from which I could not escape.

That's utter bollocks. That's not how PI claims work.

UbiquitousObjects · 05/02/2025 22:59

Scattering complaints and drowning banks, ICO, Ombudsman, solicitors in info won't get you anywhere.

If the SAR font is too small to be legible, call the bank and tell them that. Ask for a bigger copy.

If you have no luck, tell the bank you're visually impaired and a vulnerable customer due to this and you'd like a copy in large print. The bank will shit their pants to comply.

What a disgusting way to talk about people unfortunate enough to suffer from a devastating mental illness.

I think it's the likely option. One of my closest friends of about 18 years has skitzophrenia and she becomes exactly like this if her meds stop working (happened twice) or she stops taking them (happened a handful of times). She also spends an unhealthy amount of time shouting into the void by making posts on random websites and forums, joining chat rooms and discord, basically any attention she can get from anybody who will listen.

The more she repeats it the more she seems to believe it and a lot of it is baffling. Some is half truthful and will revolve around a real thing that happened but be a very very colourful interpretation of events that followed.

She's fine when she's medicated.

nice well anyway... here we are, it's strange how Mumsnet is described in it's own advertising as a place for everyone... with something like 7million memners, yet it appears it isn't for everyone...!

I've had to do 5 minutes on the naughty step, for my VPN... where are you gonna end up...?
