Barclays blocked account

Hi All,

Need some advice. So last Tuesday my husbands Barclays account was blocked along with our joint account and savings account. My account is still fine and working.

He has spoken to them so many times and they were unable to explain the reason for this and to wait 7 days.

Fast forward to today I received a letter addressed to me saying we have frozen your account (joint account) please get back to us regarding these transactions. Instantly I was like what the hell looking at the transactions there was two 1. For December 2 of £200 from source nationwide 2. For December 3rd of £300 source nationwide.

Instantly I checked my statements as NO money ever gets paid into this account apart from me and my husband from our Barclays account. 1 DD goes out of here and that’s it. Checked the statement nothing of them transactions nothing within 15 days of what they have asked for.

I rang them today and asked what is this as this does not match up with what they have sent me, they said this is the reason my whole entire account has also been blocked due to these transactions but mine hasn’t. They mentioned my husband will also get the same letter regarding these transactions.

I explained I have no idea what they are going on about, nothing on my statement what so ever which they confirmed is the case. Then they go on to say oh these amounts were due into your account. I said from who as no one has these account details. They said just from someone who banks with nationwide.

No one has the bank details, the account isn’t used much.

Is Barclays at error here cause I am puzzled. My husband has over £1500 set his account for our rent which is now late due to this problem what on earth can I do they said it can take up to additional 7 days. We cannot wait anymore I am so annoyed as it makes no sense!! HATE BARCLAYS. Anyone had this issue before?

How is that relevant? OP says Barclays is referring to two attempted transactions in December.

So did your DH not notice these two amounts and question them at the time

OP, it sounds as though Barclays are querying two transactions that don't appear on the statement that you can see? So how did they expect you to know about them?

It's possible that someone entered your account details by mistake, eg got the account number wrong (I did that once on a direct debit to my mum, only realised when 6 months later she said she wasn't receiving anything), but actually nowadays there's that extra level of inputting the account holder's name and the system checking that it matches the account number you've given. So I don't think it could be a mistake, unless Nationwide doesn't use that system or it can be overridden by the customer.

The fact that they've flagged the transactions before they've been completed and frozen the account is very strange.

Unfortunately there are some instances in which banks can suddenly cease your custom and they don't have to tell you why, which means you can't challenge them as to the accuracy of the "evidence" they have against you. I hope your DH isn't in that situation.

The OP says the two transactions don't appear on the statement. Says Barclays confirmed they were "due" but sounds like they didn't actually reach the account.

Ah, right, thanks.

It sounds like the attempted transactions were detected as potentially related to financial crime (e.g. money laundering or fraud). The bank is asking were you legitimately expecting any such transactions that could explain them

Franny0696 · 02/02/2025 13:18

Just makes no sense what so ever. Especially when these transactions haven't even hit the account. I had no idea about these until I got the letter yesterday.

Just odd that they blocked all my husbands accounts with Barclays relating to these non existent transactions on our joint account but mine is fine. Really left us in crap as cannot pay any of our bills as our money is his bank account. So annoyed
