How much do you spend on a holiday

PerkyOchrePeer · 01/02/2025 20:14

I am following a vlog from someone who is spending six months travelling to Australia New Zealand and the far East. The total cost of the trip is 10,000 pounds. They are staying in youth hospitals which are very cheap but I'm not sure whether I would want to spend that amount of money for six months is that cheap I've no

Also I would like to know whether people think it's worth spending all that for travel or would you rather spend it on furniture for your home or upgrading your kitchen or putting it towards buying a new car

Well it’s all about priority at the time, surely? As a family we once spent about 12k going to Nz but other years when fixing the roof or putting in a new bathroom / buying a new car, we’ve gone to Wales or the Lake District or splashed out on a ferry to France. On average, as a family of 4 we’ve spent around 1.5 - 4k on a summer holiday. Now the DCs are older and out of school I hope it’ll be a fair bit less.

Noidea2024 · 01/02/2025 20:25

As above; it's about priorities. We probably spend around £5k a year on holidays. We have once spent around £10k in a single holiday to the States. We would rather do that that but furniture etc. we generally buy those things second hand. Similarly with cars - holidays give us quality time, family experiences and memories. A car is functional, so we only upgrade if needed. We have friends, though, who prioritise nice cars and spending on home decor. Each to their own.

Bjorkdidit · 01/02/2025 20:26

There's another thread running where someone is looking at spending £10k on a single week's holiday.

But as to what people spend, how long is a piece of string? It will be somewhere between a few hundred and a few tens of thousands and what is reasonable to you depends on how much spare money you have and what other demands you have on it.

If you have loads of money and don't need/want any other large purchases at the moment, it's reasonable to spend a lot more on a holiday than if you have little or nothing in savings and need to buy a car to get to work.

PerkyOchrePeer · 01/02/2025 20:29

I like to live in a well maintained home so any spare money I have I used to maintain my home so if I have a few thousand and my home needs to be decorated or I need new carpets I would use them on that because at the end of the day if you go on the holiday you will come back to thread bear carpets and a home that badly needs decorating all for the sake of wanting to go and see a new country I don't think so

I don't want to feel embarrassed by inviting people to my home when it's looking shabby

£10k for 6 months is amazing, especially with Oz and NZ involved, they are both expensive

Last year our main holiday was probably £7500 including what we spent whilst there

Plus another £2.5k over the course of the year on short breaks

This year our main holiday would probably be £15k total (Disney / Universal) but we are lucky enough to have help from my FIL on that so we will probably end up spending about £5k

We tend to prioritise spending money on holidays but we are doing big house renovations this year so other than our main holiday we won't be doing much in the way of short breaks etc

I honestly don't think anyone would just you for having old carpets, I certainly wouldn't. But it's totally your choice where you spend your money

Who would be surprised because I have a friend who looks down on people who don't have smart homes

This year is about £12k (including food spending etc) last year was under £1k - it varies!

That's a perfectly valid choice. Other people make a different choice.

You might feel better if you think carefully about why that upsets you. Presumably you don't care about someone else's carpets!

Is it because you don't feel confident in your own choices? Or you feel 'less than' because you can't do both? Everyone has to make choices!

Put the vlog down, enjoy your own life, and feel good about the things that you've chosen and are important to you.

We spend one income on travel. It’s excessive to most, but we don’t pay school fees, plenty of people drop £75k a year on that.

No you don't, people who do that aren't friends.

You do what you think is best with your money. Even if they were ever satisfied with your home, they'd find something else to look down on you for, because people who do that always do.

Fluff111 · 01/02/2025 20:59

£30K for 2 people for 6 weeks in Singapore and Australia in 2013. That was a one off. Generally £10-12K a year for 2.

we spend much more than that, but so what? I could be drowning in champagne or starving, but it doesn’t impact you. Scroll on

What does this mean in practice? Are you travelling a lot or are you spending on luxury/high end places?

What I do not like is people who don't clean their homes I don't go to people's homes in that state

It means out of the way locations, high end hotels, escorted tours that are tailor made. Lots of experiences when in countries, sometimes flying business, but usually premium. We also travel quite a bit, so big summer holiday, ski holiday and maybe long haul at Xmas, or half term. It also means that I sometimes say no as it’s just too pricey. If you’re willing to pay, someone will take it off you in a fancy way!

that was to answer @IKnowAristotle

HundredPercentUnsure · 01/02/2025 21:08

I would definitely prioritise travel. It used to be as a rough guide: allow 1k for each month of travelling. That was fairly accurate when I went as a solo traveller back in the noughties. Travel buys experiences, memories, broadens your view, opportunities to meet new acquaintances that you wouldn't otherwise meet, interesting perspectives, things to talk about, new things to try etc etc. A new carpet buys....just that, and it'll last a few years before needing replacing again.

If your friend is judging you for your carpet, they aren't a friend.

I'm happy with a roof over my head. It doesn't need to be a fancy roof.

@PerkyOchrePeerHave you travelled? Do you holiday?

HairyToity · 01/02/2025 21:11

This year we're doing some home improvements so under 1k, last year 4k. Could never afford to have six months not working, nevermind the 10k cost

AcquadiP · 01/02/2025 21:53

As others have said, it's down to priorities. Normally I stay at a dog-friendly caravan park for 2 x 7 nights each year, roughly £1100. Last year I replaced my car and the insurance was more than I expected so this year I've booked 2 x 4 nights £750. I book my holidays a year in advance to qualify for a discount which in part covers the charge for taking my dog, £60 for 7 days.

Oneflewovermycarsbed · 01/02/2025 22:00

How long is a piece of string? Swings and roundabouts. I went to Vancouver last year and spent about £5000 ,this year grandchild due fairly soon so money being spent on the grandchild inc necessities. I might try and grab a cheap week away in Majorca if the money is there to do it 🤷‍♀️

Yes I do travel I have been on holiday I went to Australia last year because I had some spare money so I used a portion of it for that. I still have some of the money left but I'm thinking that I want to keep it just in case I need it to use in my home because if I spend the remainder of the money on a holiday then it would all be gone and once I need something for my home I won't be able to afford it because I've spent the money on a holiday
