How much do you spend on a holiday

I am following a vlog from someone who is spending six months travelling to Australia New Zealand and the far East. The total cost of the trip is 10,000 pounds. They are staying in youth hospitals which are very cheap but I'm not sure whether I would want to spend that amount of money for six months is that cheap I've no

Also I would like to know whether people think it's worth spending all that for travel or would you rather spend it on furniture for your home or upgrading your kitchen or putting it towards buying a new car

The OP doesn’t seem overly interested in replying to posters, but doesn’t mind just talking about her experiences. Slightly weird

Yeah I'm finding it a bit odd tbh

We spend about £6000 on 10 days in summer
Then another £3000 for a week at some other point in the year.
We also do a few staycations throughout the year which probably amount to around £1000.

We like our family time together outwith the house so happy to pay for it.

Depends on how you like to live your life/spend your money....

It is all very I am a strong believer in providing for your children helping them by their own homes helping them through University financially and if you use all your money on holidays you've got nothing to help your children with and it's all very well saying take the children abroad on the holiday they'll have memories but what about securing their future to stop them paying off a student University load for the next 20 or 30 years and then there so busy paying off their loan they can't say for a mortgage

Some of us can do all those things. If we couldn't, we'd prioritise accordingly. It almost seems as if you're trying to convince people home improvements are better than holidays, when really, everyone's financial issues are different.
Also, shelling out several thousands for your kids student loans is pointless. The huge majority of them will never pay all of their loan off anyway, it'll be wiped out before they finish. Save it for helping them to buy cars or first homes instead.

Spain for both.
the £6000 one we like a swim up room so that bumps up the price.
the other was peek season so that's why it was £3000

Ive been told for long ifhts where there is a connection, if the first flight is delayed and you miss your connection then you're not protected because you have booked it online but if you go through a travel agent and that happens then you are protected which means that they can put you on the next available flight at no cost because it's not your fault but if you do it online you are not protected if you have an issue there's nobody for you to speak to to sort out the issue like a delayed flights

OP posts:
PerkyOchrePeer · 05/02/2025 10:58

Booking travel agents maybe more expensive but it means that you've got the security of someone to speak to if there is a problem. Who do you speak to if you book to Expedia nobody

We budget £20k for 4 of us, per year. Spend it each year. Our household income is around £130k. We own more than half our home in equity & are both under 40, kids early teens. We have a beautiful home. Holidays are what we spend all our spare cash on. We don’t have loads of savings, nor any debt. If people aren’t in debt then they can spend what they like on holidays 🤷‍♂️

RobinEllacotStrike · 05/02/2025 11:04

I'm travelling to NZ with 2 teenagers - just the flights alone are costing £4600 and those were pretty much the cheapest available, booking well in advance.

We will stay with friends/family and don't have to hire a car.

The 3 weeks is likley to cost around £7,800 for 3 of us. £4800 for travel (including transit estas, travel to airport), and assuming we spend £1,000 per week (easy done as NZ is very expensive) - that is a lot of money for a 3 week holiday where we are probably only having to spend on 4 nights accommodation.

AirborneElephant · 05/02/2025 11:48

£10,000 for six months? That’s incredibly cheap. I spend more than that on two weeks, but the I’d definitely prioritise travel over carpets, fancy clothes or new kitchens. So it all depends what your priorities are 🤷‍♀️

nuttyslackster · 05/02/2025 11:49

Holidays are also a priority for us. We have sadly had a number of family members pass away prematurely and it focuses the mind on what matters. For us it's about creating memories and experiencing the world. We get a lot of pleasure from planning and reminiscing about our trips. We spend £20K pa for 3. Usually 1 long haul and 2 short haul and 1 UK trip.

Lesina · 05/02/2025 11:55

Around £12,000 - £15,000 a year. We can afford it, we like it and we prioritise it over other things. Each to their own and all that.

PerkyOchrePeer · 05/02/2025 11:56

What part of New Zealand are you going because I went to Wellington and I did not like it because Wellington is too windy and there's nothing much there and I would never go to Wellington again

OP posts:
TheScenicWay · 05/02/2025 12:08

Holidays are a priority for me too and I don't have threadbare carpets or a shabby house.
We work hard (yes, we're lucky too)
I found a few online tech jobs (moderating and data analysis) and do them alongside my job.
We don't spend money on alcohol or many meals out.
We've done the same as many others - a big trip costing around £10k, some abroad for around £5k and some years it's been a week in the UK.
If we need to prioritise doing our bathroom one year or whatever, that's what we do.

I am originally from NZ and visit family in the North Island.
I've never been to Wellington 🤣

Ive jusþ sorted out a trip to Brisbane in June. I am looking forward to it

We budget £10K a year as a family of 4. DC currently 7 and 10. We could spend more but it's a balance. I'm trying to put as much as I can into pensions at the moment and we pay school fees for eldest DC. We're lucky that our modern house is low maintenance and simply decorated but will need new carpets in next few years.
I try and squeeze as much as I can from that £10K - this year we have a Eurocamp week in Amsterdam at Easter, 2 weeks in France in summer (Eurocamp again) and a week AI in Turkey in October. I'm already planning ahead for 2026.

EveryDayisFriday · 08/02/2025 07:17

Family of 4.

We've spent £8.5k for wks in Disneyworld. Not been abroad since then and that was 5yrs ago.

We've been doing weekends away in a cottage for £500- £600 all over the UK.

Last year we did a 2wk rental motorhome trip around Scotland, that came in at just under £3k. That was a fun adventure but pricy.

We're keeping our costs down for the next couple of years so won't be doing big holidays until then, we are planning lots of cheap camping trips.

PerkyOchrePeer · 08/02/2025 07:37

Im going for two weeks to brisbane. In my job if you want more than 2 weeks then you have to get permission from the director. Ive been to australia before for 3 weeks and by half way through the 3rd week i tend to get homesick. I begin to get fed up of eating in restaurants and crave being at home cooking my own food and eating in my own home.

I like traveling and seeing new places but i also love being at home. I can speñd an entire saturday and not step outside my front door and just enjoy my cosy home.

EveryDayisFriday · 08/02/2025 07:40

We've been prioritising renovating our home. I travelled all over the world as a child, my parents are now struggling financially.
My money is being spent on setting up a decent future, then a nice home (I spend 95% of my time at home), then holidays. Abroad holidays are just so expensive at the moment, I cant justify the £1000s needed.

Elphamouche · 08/02/2025 08:07
  • People have different priorities
  • My carpets aren’t threadbare
  • Holidays and family time are more important to me than the latest style at home.
  • Our home is clean
  • Holidays, like people come in all different shapes and sizes.
  • Get some better friends!

I don't believe this to be correct. If you've booked a flight with 1 carrier eg klm ...London via amsterdam then Amsterdam to Singapore and the first leg is delayed then KLM will sort next available flight for you as it's a whole journey. This doesn't matter if you've booked online or through agent.
If it's separate carriers and 1 is delayed resulting in you missing flight then it's your problem to sort.

I think if you cannot find anything to do in Wellington, then there is no point visiting the rest of NZ.

Not sure what this thread is about to be honest.

That is wrong. Just because someone doe not enjoy welli gton it doesnt mean they wont enjoy somewhere else. I travelled from wellington city to the suburbs to upperhutt and it was much nicer

My stair carpet is threadbare and we’re mid-renovation but we’ll absolutely be taking a holiday this year. Hopefully multiple trips.
