How much do you spend on a holiday

I am following a vlog from someone who is spending six months travelling to Australia New Zealand and the far East. The total cost of the trip is 10,000 pounds. They are staying in youth hospitals which are very cheap but I'm not sure whether I would want to spend that amount of money for six months is that cheap I've no

Also I would like to know whether people think it's worth spending all that for travel or would you rather spend it on furniture for your home or upgrading your kitchen or putting it towards buying a new car

That is wrong. Just because someone doe not enjoy welli gton it doesnt mean they wont enjoy somewhere else. I travelled from wellington city to the suburbs to upperhutt and it was much nicer

You said there was nothing to do, which is bizarre as Wellington has theatres, museums, shops, restaurants, parks, historic buildings etc etc.

What did you find to do in Upper Hutt?

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 08/02/2025 08:33

@PerkyOchrePeer could you give the link to the vlog you mentioned in your first post please? Sounds amazing. I dream of doing this.

NotDarkGothicMama · 08/02/2025 08:42

It all depends on budget and priorities doesn't it? This year we're spending £4.5k on a week in Paris and another £8k on a week in Iceland. Last year we spent £15k on two weeks in Mexico and £5k on a week in the Alps. Next year we're redoing the bathroom so it will be a lot less.

LivLuna · 08/02/2025 09:02

It depends. Most years when the DC were young we would spend around 6k a year over 2 holidays, one would be a resort in Turkey and the other a ski holiday. As they got older we did a few train tours in different European countries costing around 4-6k each year. Over 20 years we have had 3 big multi destination trips that were much more expensive. Most recent was taking 2 teens on what will probably be their last holiday with us before they go it alone. We went to Japan, NZealand and Hong Kong over 6 weeks and it came out about 6k each.

By the way our carpets are 10 years old, parts of the house need decorating and repairs are overdue. The garden needs work and the garage needs clearing of rubbish. We prioritised spending time together whilst the teens will still join us (albeit reluctantly) and we will get round to those jobs eventually. I also wanted to show them the world and how to navigate it, rather than just a holiday resort.

Cookiesandcandies · 08/02/2025 09:04

We do a big holiday at least every two years that all in will cost between £8k and £10k for two weeks. But I mean all in, including any shopping we do there, anything we buy in prep for the holiday etc etc.

Then we will do one or two shorter breaks a year where we budget up to £1,500 per person per week.

I put £1k a month plus my bonus into our holiday saving pot. Sometimes we use it all, sometimes we don’t.

In upper hutt i stayed with friedsa of someone i know. We went to two shows and saw mountains and went out to eat. Where they live is very remote and you need a car as there is no public transport but the only downfall was they had a rotweiler dog as a guard and did not tell me and one day the dog ran up to me whilst i was walking through the grounds of their house and was barking. I have never been so scared in my entiew life. It came right up to me. I just froze and eventually the dog disappeared and i ran into the house and was shaking. After that holiday I never spoke to them again because they had a duty to tell me not only did they have a dog but it was a Rottweiler and I could have been allergic to dogs how did they know they never asked me I could have been seriously hurt

I have a question to ask
I have just been advised that there is a direct flight I can take from the UK to Western Australia and then go on to Brisbane but it costs 100 pounds extra for a shorter flying time and I don't think it's worth it and besides I would get into Brisbane at seven pm and then by the time I got to my hotel it would be probably two hours later and I just be going to bed if I do via the Middle East it would be cheaper and I'd get to Brisbane but I launch time so I'd have the evening to look around and get my bearings

You have posted extensively about how disappointing and uninteresting you found Australia last time you visited. Do you really think Brisbane will be that different?

Lunch2Earlytime · 10/02/2025 14:06

We drive old, vintage vehicles & maintain ourselves

No carpets, flooring

Buy yellow sticker food

Live relatively frugally

Last year we had several weeks in Singapore, Thailand & Vietnam (planned by ourselves)
Singapore is expensive, but only had a couple of days there
Some UK holidays with family & friends
Week on European island
Week in European country
We avoid all expensive times when booking holidays
All the above for probably less than 8k for 2

We prioritise holidays & travel because that is what we enjoy

Plus new boiler for the property last year

Hopefully the property will be future proof after the work

BTW
I have been to Iceland for a week & probably spent less than IK per person including tours

2BTW
New Zealand is expensive
Vietnam is much better value for money

PerkyOchrePeer · 10/02/2025 14:54

Each area is different. You need to do a lot of research and go to a lot of different areas of the place you are in to find it interesting which I haven't really bothered to do but I will this time. When I was in Adelaide I hardly went out of the CBD area except going on a trip to Kangaroo Island and obviously there's more to Adelaide than the CBD area

Around £4k usually for about 10 days self catering in Europe (family of 4, two teens). That's flying budget airline, hiring a car

Sometimes we stay at my parents' house in Eastern Europe so that's just flights and a car, nearer £1.2k

PerkyOchrePeer · 10/02/2025 14:59

I did attempt to go to the Adelaide botanical gardens but it was very hot and I was exhausted and I didn't like the botanical gardens and there was no cafe there to sit down and relax and have a snack and a drink and I did ask somebody I said is there a cafe in here and they said no there isn't and I was extremely thirsty and hungry so I left and went to get a coffee and some lunch which I would have had at the Gardens if they'd been somewhere

I don't understand why everybody raves about botanical gardens because I do not like looking at shrubs and plants I found them so utterly boring

What kind of work do you do, @PerkyOchrePeer?

PerkyOchrePeer · 10/02/2025 15:23

What is the point of sending me a link to the food areas in the Adelaide botanical gardens when I am not going to adulate but I am going to Brisbane. I will look at the Botanical Gardens in Brisbane see what it's like and see what there is in the way of getting some food

PerkyOchrePeer · 10/02/2025 15:28

I've just looked at a video of the botanical gardens in Brisbane and I'm still not convinced it I would enjoy looking at different tree species and plants and shrubs it's not my cup of tea and I wouldn't even go to something like this in my own hometown in the UK. I have been to Kew Gardens in London but again that's actually boring and I haven't been to Kew Gardens for over 10 years and I've got no intentions of ever going there again

HorrorFan81 · 10/02/2025 15:49

If you don't like botanical gardens why are you going to the Brisbane ones? Just do something else?

Bjorkdidit · 10/02/2025 16:04

Yes, the OP seems to be deliberately seeking out holiday activities she's going to hate, as if they're compulsory and she's been told 'you will spend thousands of pounds on a trip to the southern hemisphere, whether you want to or not'.

If you're not that fussed about holidays, you could always just not have them.

Because people are different and we don’t all like the same things….! 🤷‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️😂

This is a weird thread. It simply seems to be OP having a conversation with herself about all the places she's visited that she hasn't enjoyed. Nothing whatsoever to do with the original question asked 🤷🏻‍♀️

Agree! It's full of people answering the question posed by the OP with good intent (including myself) intertwined with the OP ranting about plants.

FriNightBlues · 10/02/2025 21:41

Have you ever considered writing about your travels OP? I'm now itching to avoid the Botanical Gardens in Brisbane, just based on your posts. Not to mention starting a petition for a cafe there.
