Is it too late to register for tax self assessment for 2023 / 2024?

I have just realised that I need to submit a self assessment tax return for 2023 / 2024.

i have never had to complete a self assessment before, have not been contacted by the HMRC & do not have a self assessment log in.

Is it to late to set up a self assessment log in to complete the return before the 31st January? Does anyone know what the penalty is likely to be if it is too late and I am not able to complete the assessment before the deadline?

I was in the same position and called them last week, they set it up over the phone for me. Getting through to them is quite frustrating as none of the options they give apply - I said "no" to the first option and it put me straight through to a call handler.

Thank you @NannyR that’s a relief.

Sorry @NannyR, can I just ask if you were fined for late registration (seen on an old thread on this board that this may be a thing)?

I don't know as yet, he said it would go down as failure to notify but that I shouldn't worry about it.

Ok, thank you @NannyR .

You might be better phoning them. When I registered I had to wait for them to post me a letter with details of how to get set up. Can't remember how long it took, but I couldn't do anything until I got the letter

Do it today.

They need to post you a code unless you already have a government gateway account and that can take time.

In the mean time, get all of your information (receipts, income details etc) together so that you're ready to file immediately.

Thanks @WiseLurker, I do have a note of a government gateway user ID, so would that mean I have a government gateway account? If so do you know if it would be easier to register for sel assessment?

No idea why I have it, maybe it is from the time I checked my state pension summary a while ago.
