Emergency tax code

Hello, I started a nee job in September and had a tax refund which was unexpected, im
unsure where it came from? After this hmrc then put me on an emergency XL tax code saying I had underpaid tax this year..again not sure how. I called hmrc and they said I should be on 1257l and that this had been rectified, this was a week ago and gov gateway is still showing emergency tax code. I work until 6pm and can’t get through to them on my lunch break, has this ever happened to anyone else? Could the refund be a mistake hence why I’m on an emergency code?

the Hmrc advisor also didn’t know where the refund came from..?
im very confused by it all 🤣 it’s not happened to me before

If you know what your tax code is meant to be and have your payslips/p45 etc you can work out how much you’ve paid v how much you should have paid.

this tells yous if you owe tax or are owed and can work out what you should pay the rest of the year

Having looked through my p45 it looks slightly less than what’s showing on hmrc gateway which is strange 🤔
