Can I claim child benefit?

My usual salary means that I am not entitled to CB, however I’m currently on maternity leave and over the course of the year, will make approximately 50% of my usual salary. This amount is within the eligibility for child benefit. Am I entitled to claim for this year? I didn’t even look into it previously but my husband has been made redundant so money is tight now.

Yes you can, then complete a tax return.

Anyone is free to claim child benefit. If you go over the threshold (£60k) in a particular tax year you'd register for self assessment and pay some or all of it back. Once you reach £80k it would all need to be paid back
