Personal Account

Probably the dullest topic of the day. I want to start a personal account but not barclays's. Any recommendations?

What do you mean by 'personal account'?

A current account? A savings account? What are you looking for? High interest rate? Ease of access? Company with good customer service?

WillowTit · 06/10/2024 10:14

building society?

fantasticoplastico · 06/10/2024 10:16

A current account. Day to day stuff. I don't live anywhere where there are branches so needs a simple app.

I recommend First Direct. You always get a human when you ring and their customer service is great.

Longhotsummers · 06/10/2024 10:19

I’ve been with Nationwide for decades and they’ve always been good to deal with.

MathsFiend · 06/10/2024 10:19

Nationwide? Tops tables for customer service. And if you have a current account plus a savings account with £100 in the savings account then you become a member. The last 2 years, members have been given £100 each as part of their fairer share awards.

I love Starling!

IVFmumoftwo · 06/10/2024 10:20

Starling are good. All online.

Wolfpa · 06/10/2024 10:38

Chase is easy to open and you get cash back on your general spends

NewIdeasToday · 06/10/2024 10:40

Chase. Really good interest rate on savings. I keep most of my money in a savings account and just transfer £200 or so when I need to get cash or use my bank card. So easy to set up and use.

Bjorkdidit · 06/10/2024 10:45

Kroo is another option. Pays about 4% interest so good as a combined spending and saving account.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 06/10/2024 11:24

Monzo, nationwide. Chase

fantasticoplastico · 06/10/2024 11:57

These are great thank you

Chase

Chase is a good account as its paying interest on account, easy to open and customer service has been good

I find the app far better than first direct tbh

I like that fact you can get cash back and move money easily. They also are paying over 4.5% on one account - so keep my money int hat and only moe to spend - no overdraft though and ive never asked.

I like Nationwide but again not as nice layout and way to use as `chase

Chase don't charge for over seas spending on card (not cash from machine) and give you bank rate, so far far better than money exchange in Sainsbury or airport

Notaflippinclue · 06/10/2024 13:44

Nationwide

happinessischocolate · 06/10/2024 15:45

1st direct are currently giving £175 if you open a current account and have 3 (I think) direct debits set up.

alwaysmovingforwards · 06/10/2024 19:23

Chase by JPMorgan.
1% cashback, good app and strong interest rates.
Also they gave a promo £100 when opening a nutmeg GIA at only £1k min.

JemimaTab · 06/10/2024 19:40

I can recommend 1st Direct - I've been with them over 10 years and no complaints. The app is very user-friendly. They don't have bank branches but you can use HSBC if you want a branch. Their telephone helpline is good too - you get to speak to an actual person and are not kept waiting or having to push umpteen buttons to get through.

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 06/10/2024 20:10

Monzo. 10000000% all day, every day. I have current and savings accounts with Monzo, Nationwide, Chase, Starling and a couple of others. Monzo tops all of them.

NoEffingWay · 06/10/2024 20:32

I absolutely recommend First Direct, when you call them it rings once or twice and a human answers! No waiting and they are so, so helpful.

YankeeDad · 06/10/2024 21:51

I have Monzo as a secondary account and like using it as a spending account for small purchases, but their security is horrific! They regularly ask for a PIN when buying things in local shops but they completely failed to spot fraud when someone totally drained the account into an online gambling site even though I have never have used online gambling. I got the money refunded but I would not use them as a main account.

I have read good things about Chase UK and they are apparently taking lots of market share with their app and their cashback on credit card purchases, but I have not tried them myself.

Lincslady53 · 07/10/2024 18:19

Another vote for Starling. V easy to set up, 3% interest on balance, paid monthly, free use of debit card abroad. We are away at the moment and getting €1.188 euros to the poind with no charges. The app works well, and you can also access via a Web browser if you prefer.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 07/10/2024 22:25

First Direct are brilliant, always answer the phone and always keep proper records of conversations so they can sort out any problems. Also good at spotting possible fraud.

LeroyJenkinssss · 07/10/2024 22:44

Monzo. Love it and use for daily spending and pots. Have found that the pots have vastly improved my finances!

odd I’ve never had the issue with PIN request (just use my phone).

out of interest why not Barclays?
