HMRC making someone bankrupt

I wondered whether anyone has experience of this?
It concerns a family member who owes a huge debt to HMRC that has apparently been accumulating for years. He has had a "statutory demand" from HMRC for the debt which I understand is the final stage before they start the bankruptcy process and the deadline on that demand runs out soon (and may already have passed). As I understand it, the debt is so big that there is absolutely no way it can be paid.
What I'm trying to find out is how long it usually takes in cases like this for HMRC to move to the next stage, and for the bankruptcy to actually happen.
This is not a family member I'm close to (to put it mildly), but I am concerned for his wife who is a nice woman and hasn't a clue about what happens next. He has completely closed down on her and refuses to discuss any of this.
