PREMIUM BONDS AUGUST/SEPT 2024

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/09/2024 10:02

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff

PB have been about since 1957

Been 30yrs (April 2024) since a million was then the highest prize

nsandi-corporate.com/news-research/news/30-years-premium-bonds-ps1-million-jackpots#

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 so means 25 chances to win.

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

This means they will go into the next months draw without losing a month

Or sent to named bank account if over /want winnings in bank account

More info here

www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to then hoping win thousands to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

We've seen over the years £100 win £100k and £50 win £25k and £1 win £25k

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1925 in prizes

If have £5k average luck is £175 winnings a year

Obviously some people have better 'luck' than others and some worse - Ie full holdings and not winning anything a month or two

PB odds calculator below

moneymarvel.co.uk/calculators/premium-bonds/

Or this one is quite good as shows the interest rate of the winnings - obv anything over 5% is good as if in an account you wouid be taxed so be more like 3.75%)

www.candidmoney.com/calculators/national-savings-premium-bond-calculator

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 21,000:1, can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,925

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 5/6% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

	Current name

	Current address

	Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

	Your signature

You can send your letter to:

NS&I,
Sunderland
SR43 2SB.

There are 2 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

Blue - the app its self works but the showing early often doesn't work for me but those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

Seems the higher the winnings the earlier it shows and can be from 6pm the night before the app shows

And to confuse things I have a White app that is a bookmark - which shows info/list 😄😄😄

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out if going to get a visit from AM 😂

The two winners of
the £1million prizes will be contacted by Agent Million (AM) 😂😂 the day before the first working day of the corresponding month.

There may however be
exceptions to this, such as when the first working day of the month is a
bank holiday, for example.

So

Day before first working day - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Day after first working day , including weekends - cream app showing all winnings

You can also check to see if have won via this link with your holders number

www.nsandi.com/prize-checker

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

We've got a man coming to measure up for some new windows and a front door today and one of the cars is in the garage for MOT, service and some repairs so an expensive day! DH came into me this morning showing me his phone - I'd won £25 but he'd won £5100! Biggest ever win and will cover the windows and the car bill!

That’s brilliant 👏

no win for me but I only started it June and only have £50 so no wonder 😂 trying to get DH to sign up as he has a more substantial savings pot so should do better than me

CaveMum · 03/09/2024 21:18

hexsnidgett · 03/09/2024 15:51

Big win for dh!!! 10k+
Was thinking of cashing in too, they must have heard me.

That’s amazing! Congratulations, hope there’s something nice and frivolous you can spend some of it on!

Hopingforno2in2024 · 03/09/2024 21:28

Wowser!

LePetitMaman · 03/09/2024 23:09

Fuck all here, on virtually full holdings.

Getting drastically fed up with premium bonds, but can't withdraw because I'll forever think that would have been the month I won the million

DrMadelineMaxwell · 03/09/2024 23:10

£0 for me on £32k. Will be £35k valid for the draw in Sept.

£125 for DH on FH.

MadTerrierWoman · 03/09/2024 23:14

£150 on FH this month and £175 last month. I seem to win most months but don’t take it for granted! I’m not working atm so this is very welcome. Have bought a few for my daughter this month as it’s a big birthday for her.

Wouldn't surprise me, though I don't expect anything.

Starseeking · 04/09/2024 04:44

Nothing for me this month.

SweetLathyrus · 04/09/2024 13:21

Joining in for the first time, though I've had varying amounts in PBs over the last four years from over 40k-9k.

Current (eligible) holding 11.5k with a £50 win this month.

I'm going to be putting lump sums in for the rest of the financial year which I'll then transfer to an ISA in April, as I've maxed my allowance this financial year, and think I've probably topped out my personal interest allowance becuause of a series of good fixes.

63isMe · 04/09/2024 15:00

Oooh £200! 😁😁

Oceangreyscale · 04/09/2024 20:22

Next month will be my first draw so I'll join properly then.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/09/2024 21:58

CreamLampshade · 04/09/2024 23:25

Im on £47k. Won £150 this month. Not bad. And almost £6k last month!

elkiedee · 05/09/2024 15:11

I've forgotten my login to check on the app, and I only have £401 in so I doubt I'll win.

I'm planning to open a Coventry Building Society Sunny Day Saver account which offers quite a good interest rate - 6.25% - but a maximum pay in of £150 a month for a year. And I don't think I'll be putting as much as that in it. But there is a monthly prize draw for a prize of £500 (and 19 smaller prizes) for anyone who pays at least £10 in. I think I'm going to aim to put in £20 for now. I know there's not a big win but it seems very risk free for me (not so much for anyone who would have to pay tax on savings or a win) and it's a better rate on a much smaller amount of money than the Halifax account with cash prize draw someone was looking at cashing in her bonds to open a few weeks ago (minimum of £5,000, less than competitive interest rate, a much bigger maximum prize, can't remember if there were smaller ones, but after looking into it

I already have an 8% regular saver at Nationwide which I'm aiming to pay the maximum in until January - that matures in early February and I might buy more Premium Bonds with it for a few months.

PBs are a small bit of my savings strategy - most of my savings are in cash ISAs plus some other cash accounts, as I'm probably going to have to start using what I have saved some time next year. DS1 has just started year 13 and hopes to go to university next year, DS2 in year 11. We've just discovered that our house needs major work doing to sort out the electric wiring - we're hoping to hold out, probably until at least summer (after the boys' exams) and possibly longer. We discovered due to losing our mains electricity downstairs for a few days and being advised that it's a system problem. So, all in all, a really good win would come in very useful but otherwise it's a bit of fun.

longtompot · 05/09/2024 16:23

Nothing this month for either dh (fh) or me (£10k) :(

Well done to those who've won, esp the big winners🎉

WitchCerce · 05/09/2024 16:32

Saw a few people have put their winnings of a few years . In 3 years , 9 months of FH , I've won £3450 , if any mathematical person can work out the % of interest please do.
Doesn't look too great from where I'm sitting.
