PREMIUM BONDS AUGUST/SEPT 2024

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/09/2024 10:02

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff

PB have been about since 1957

Been 30yrs (April 2024) since a million was then the highest prize

nsandi-corporate.com/news-research/news/30-years-premium-bonds-ps1-million-jackpots#

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 so means 25 chances to win.

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

This means they will go into the next months draw without losing a month

Or sent to named bank account if over /want winnings in bank account

More info here

www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to then hoping win thousands to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

We've seen over the years £100 win £100k and £50 win £25k and £1 win £25k

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1925 in prizes

If have £5k average luck is £175 winnings a year

Obviously some people have better 'luck' than others and some worse - Ie full holdings and not winning anything a month or two

PB odds calculator below

moneymarvel.co.uk/calculators/premium-bonds/

Or this one is quite good as shows the interest rate of the winnings - obv anything over 5% is good as if in an account you wouid be taxed so be more like 3.75%)

www.candidmoney.com/calculators/national-savings-premium-bond-calculator

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 21,000:1, can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,925

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 5/6% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

	Current name

	Current address

	Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

	Your signature

You can send your letter to:

NS&I,
Sunderland
SR43 2SB.

There are 2 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

Blue - the app its self works but the showing early often doesn't work for me but those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

Seems the higher the winnings the earlier it shows and can be from 6pm the night before the app shows

And to confuse things I have a White app that is a bookmark - which shows info/list 😄😄😄

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out if going to get a visit from AM 😂

The two winners of
the £1million prizes will be contacted by Agent Million (AM) 😂😂 the day before the first working day of the corresponding month.

There may however be
exceptions to this, such as when the first working day of the month is a
bank holiday, for example.

So

Day before first working day - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Day after first working day , including weekends - cream app showing all winnings

You can also check to see if have won via this link with your holders number

www.nsandi.com/prize-checker

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

@Blondeshavemorefun
I'd have to go back adn check but roughly just over £3k in a full 12 month period. The £5k was more recent and on less holdings

BuyingButterAndSatinSandals · 16/09/2024 15:14

Are those your winnings on one FH, @Jellybean85 ? I am wondering whether you shared one FH or had two or more FHs as you said we.

Sorry it's one account in my name but joint marital savings

That's a good return

I have full holdings and biggest win (so far!) has been £600 - but I'm consistently winning every month at the moment. Last year I was £1,300 although had slightly less than FH. This year I am above £2000 on the last 9 months.

elkiedee · 16/09/2024 19:09

@addies If interest rates are high/rising, then you save more, not less, by paying some off and reducing your balance You might feel less benefit if an interest rate rise means you don't see the difference in payments so much, but if you don't pay off some, your payments will be bigger.

If you're able to pay off a significant chunk of the mortgage, you could pay your monthly saving on interest (or some of it) into Premium Bonds. It might not get you to Full Holdings/the chance to win more prizes, and feel less exciting.

You could also split your money between reducing the outstanding mortgage and increasing your Premium Bond holdings.

My good intentions to try to ignore the passage of the PB months for the good of my psyche have been thwarted by a dream last night! In it one of my DC was saying excitedly 'mum, we have won fourteen hundred pounds'! Obviously not riches or a much-needed solution to our black hole, but definitely much better than the £100 in 6 months we have won so far. A late relative used to have frighteningly accurate precognitive (premonition) dreams. I haven't noticed I've inherited that so far but we'll see what the 2nd of October brings!

Back to trying to wait for an email, or at least the NS&I website prize checker on the 2nd. Thirteen days to go - hopefully lucky for all of us!

I had similar dream , I have 45k in bonds , probably for just this month as we have some big expenses coming our way next month. However, I just don't have that kind of luck , I think I will be shocked if I win anything .

JellyBeanFactory · 20/09/2024 00:14

Is it STILL September??

2nd October seems like ages away.

I am absolutely there with you, this month feels like the longest on record!

Happiestathome · 20/09/2024 07:09

I’m definitely feeling the long September too 😫. I think it’s a combination of back to work and the shift in weather. Sadly, I’m not feeling likely to win this month though. Whenever I increase my holding by a reasonable amount, I tend not to win the next time 😞.

Bimblesalong · 21/09/2024 08:44

Finger crossed for us both @Happiestathome I’ve increased my holding and that goes into the November draw (seems ages and wishing I’d kept it in a savings acc until the end of Sept 🙄). I hope neither of us has an empty September.

This is interesting, @Happiestathome because I thought I had read, perhaps on here, that folks generally felt they were more likely to win just after buying new bonds. Our only win so far, of £100 in 6 months, came right at the start after buying the bond.

I've reached that stage in life where the months and even years seem to whiz by, except when it comes to waiting for the next PB draw!

1975wasthebest · 21/09/2024 16:35

I never feel I’m likely to win because I’ve got such a small holding. I’m resigned to it until I get my holding to a five figure sum, but it’s nice to occasionally dream of the teeny tiny chance of winning.

Florafleur · 21/09/2024 16:59

A £25 cheque for me!

BiscuitlyBoyle · 21/09/2024 17:02

Does anyone know how to withdraw money but leave certain bonds in there?

Happiestathome · 21/09/2024 17:05

@BuyingButterAndSatinSandals when I previously reached full holdings, I didn’t win for 3 months straight at first. It has very much been my experience over my 4 years so far, but I’d be happy to break that trend and get a win 🤞.

There's a special online form to fill in, my first £100 of bonds were from my late grandmother so I can't bring myself to ever sell those when I withdraw funds. It's a faff to find though!

1975wasthebest · 23/09/2024 13:50

Not long now!

Not long now!

A week to Millionaire Shortbread, 8 days to the big winners list and 9 days for the rest of us living on the PB merry-go-round of hope, disappointment or excitement!

JollyHostess101 · 25/09/2024 08:35

Oooh, glad the app is on the 2nd. I’ve got to be up stupidly early to attend a conference so it’ll be a nice motivation to get my arse out of bed!

Either that or I’ll stay up to see the results at midnight then get too little sleep and be knackered and cranky all day at said conference 😜

Shall we play I Spy?

JumpinJellyfish · 25/09/2024 14:37

I haven’t won anything since April so feel I am due a win - fingers crossed for this month!

I have £10,750 in there.
