HMRC tax refund question

Hello. I overpaid a not insignificant amount of tax last year. Hmrc have paid the tax due into my bank account and have not also sent me a cheque for a similar amount(about £150 less though).
Has this happened to anyone else? I would LOVE to cash the cheque as well but don’t want them chasing me further down the line. Which means I should probably just phone and clarify….

Just phone and clarify and or check your online account if you have one to see if the totals make sense. You can also chat online on there which is often quicker and easier.

I was credited with a tax refund which I knew wasn't mine. I made numerous phone calls to HMRC and my bank, gave them the reference which appeared on the credit but no one was able to identify the payment. I knew it wasn't mine so just left it in my account. Quite a few months later my bank contacted me and the money was reclaimed and returned to HMRC. So if you did bank it they would probably track it down eventually.

Thanks. I’ll have to wait till Monday I guess till the phone lines were open.
The amount paid into my account was from my self assessment (I worked overseas part of last year) and the cheque is from my PAYE assessment.

Of course the letter would arrive on a Saturday with the money tempting me all weekend! Very strange though
