Money Transfer - Payee Reference

Someone has transferred me money with a reference note that I think will cause me issues with an upcoming mortgage application.

Is there any way that I can change or delete the reference from my statements? The actual transaction is quite important (regular child maintenance payments, by personal agreement / arrangement).

Honestly contemplating just photoshopping the reference out of the statement. I wouldn't be changing any details about payee, amount, transaction ID etc - literally just want the optional reference set by the person who sent the money removed from my statements. But then have the fear I'll be accused of fraud 😂

Has anyone got any experience of having a reference note changed? Not sure if I contact my bank they'll do this for me (Virgin Money).

What have they put?

lysistrataaa · 02/07/2024 10:38

@dementedpixie does it matter? 😂

It's just "mortgage and bills" - as a hangover from when we shared a household. But my mortgage is now in my sole name, and I am looking to move - and I don't want it to appear to the building society that I'm being helped with mortgage costs.

I do however want them to look at the transaction, as they do count regular maintenance contributions as regular income. (Nationwide, I've checked.)

Have you to give paper copies? Could you black over the reference either with pen (if on paper) or digitally if online?

So if they ask, just say that. I thought you were going to say it was something offensive or suggestion of illegality, eg 'drug money'.

It's a PITA to change references on standing orders, you have to go through all the security nonsense again with some banks, so I can see why they've not bothered.

I'd have thought that was fairly common and a note saying this is actually CM from a former partner who used to tfr mortgage and bill money but now tfrs CM money but isn't changed the reference would clear it up. Assuming you've declared the CM as income in your application.

I have to give digital copies. I thought of just whiting over the reference to be honest - like the same colour as the page, so there's nothing there.

Whiting over the reference is going to cause you more issues than just leaving it there.

it will be obvious do they are going to ask what it is.

just explain to them on the day what it is for
