For my daughter if i claim pip and lcwra for myself? I know I can't claim carers element on uc but wondered about carers allowance. My eldest daughter claims carers allowance because she's my carer.

Sorry if that sounds confusing but I can't find the information online.

I think if you get income related benefits, you can claim it but it gets deducted pound for pound from benefits.

Also, if the things you claim for contradict your caring duties, that would be tricky.

You could look for a local carer's Centre though as some offer support or services.

Miley1967 · 24/06/2024 23:02

Yes you can claim carers allowance but are no financially better off as it's deducted in full from UC anyway. The benefits to claiming it are that it gives you a better class of NI contributions towards your own state pension and it can be paid weekly making budgeting easier. Also i think there's a £10 christmas bonus - not sure if that gets deducted from Uc too or whether you get to keep that !!
You also need to be careful that the 35 hours caring that you do does not contradict the reasons you get PIP. I have seen people questioned on this at PIP tribunals.

If Carers Allowance gets deducted pound for pound from UC I don't think.its worth claiming if they will know and could hold it against you in your PIP claim. 35 hours is a lot of caring if you have a disability and need a carer to look after you.

Needmorelego · 25/06/2024 11:57

I'm baffled.
If your daughter is receiving carers because she is your carer - then who are you caring for?
I get carers for looking after my daughter. If she could be a carer for someone else then she wouldn't need me to be her carer 🤔

laejek · 25/06/2024 12:31

Yes I claim Carer's Allowance and LCWRA and PIP for my DS. Have been claiming for 10+ years and it's not been an issue when during reviews. Financially there isn't a gain so you may not want to bother, but the nuances of NI contributions are relevant to me, plus I prefer to use the CA letter for proof for certain things.

My eldest dd is 22 and is my carer. I'd be a cared to my 8 year old.

@happyhemsby I don't want this to sound rude or nasty but if you can take care of your 8 year old - do you need a carer?

TheHeadOfTheHouse · 25/06/2024 14:11

This is were the benefit system is wrong.

how the hell can some one claim carers for someone, when they have a carer themselves?

🙄

I don't do all the caring for her no. Im not psychically disabled. My carer does the feeding of the children and takes them to school etc. I bath, dress and am up all night with her which is over 35 hrs a week caring

@TheHeadOfTheHouse I agree and hope the next Government address this loophole as this is madness!

How can someone need a carer for 35 hours a week and then be a carer for 35 hours a week?

Because I'm a mum and I can assure you I care for my child more than 35hrs a week just like any parent.

@happyhemsby it sounds hard - but unfortunately I don't think both of you could claim.

Thank you do you have a carer that claims carers allowance?

I see. If you provide care in the night for over 35 hours linked to your daughters disability this is relevant to you claiming carers allowance.

Brainded · 25/06/2024 14:39

So what does your carer do for you?

Notamum12345577 · 25/06/2024 14:42

Yes you can

LadyWhistled0wn · 25/06/2024 14:50

You can, long as your claims don't conflict. I.e you both need help bathing/with food/medication etc etc

happyhemsby · 25/06/2024 15:12

Brainded · 25/06/2024 14:39

So what does your carer do for you?

Takes me shopping and appointments, cooks for us all, gives me my medication, takes children to any appointments, picks up my medication.all that jazz

I will explain exactly how this is right and appropriate in many circumstances after many years as a DWP visiting officer .

Person A has a serious MH issue . Early onset dementia.. Bi- polar , anything that affects them from
Coping with life admin .. so adhd /autism etc ..

Person B has no mental or cognitive health issues but physically disabled .. needs help to the loo, food put in the microwave etc ..

Person B qualified as a carer because spends more than 35 hours a week. 'Organising person As life .. everything from making sure they remember to attend medical appointments , to taking their medication on time ..

Person A qualified because they help B with actual physical care of getting them to the loo , fed etc ..

Tenaciousbeyondallthings · 25/06/2024 16:03

There are more people both couples and children/parents in this situation than many would realise . I know this because I witness it with my own eyes .

Needmorelego · 25/06/2024 16:03

@happyhemsby I would say just apply for it and see what happens 🙂
