For my daughter if i claim pip and lcwra for myself? I know I can't claim carers element on uc but wondered about carers allowance. My eldest daughter claims carers allowance because she's my carer.

@Tenaciousbeyondallthings thank you for that, you explained it better than I ever could have.

I have bi-polar and eupd and possible adhd. My adult daughter lives with me and cares for me so she claims carers allowance.

My 8 year old get's dla for adhd and autism. So I was asking if I can claim carers for dd8 as I do all the things she won't let anyone else do ie dressing, bathing and night needs.

Carers allowance should be scraped what a ridiculous system. Your daughter claiming for you and you claiming for doing what a parent does. Just another way for people not to work

Dontletme · 25/06/2024 16:39

I think it’s fine and quite common for a couple to care for each other. If they have different disabilities that is possible. So I would say you can probably claim in your case.

Needmorelego · 25/06/2024 16:43

By the way.....
Anyone who thinks it's terrible that carers essentially can be claimed twice - Carers Allowance is unbelievably low.
It works out at £2.34 an hour (if comparing it to a full time job). It's shocking that it's that low.

It pays a pittance, no one is giving up work, in order to claim CA. What nonsense.

Needmorelego · 25/06/2024 16:44

@marniemae no one can live off carer's allowance (ie not work but claim it instead). It's practically pocket money levels.

Needmorelego · 25/06/2024 16:46

@happyhemsby I would actually like the apologise for my first comment to you on this thread.
It was actually a bit harsh and bitchy sounding.
I'm sorry I said it.

People do give up their jobs to become a carer, 2 people in my family did it.

when you claim carers allowance you’re entitled to housing benefit, council tax benefit, carers element, universal credit, free prescriptions, free eye care, free dentist etc

it worked out the equivalent of a full time job on minimum wage for the 2 people in my family, so yes people do choose to be carers instead of working

Needmorelego · 25/06/2024 18:16

@TheHeadOfTheHouse I get Carers but I am not entitled to any of that because my husband works (modest wage - just over the amount where we would probably get some benefits).
My £327.60 a month definitely isn't equivalent to me earning a full time wage 😂

It would be if you lived on your own.

you can’t claim what I listed as you have a partner working. If someone is on their own, then they do claim all of the above.

if you earn more than minimum wage, then no it’s not the equivalent, but it is if you’re in a minimum wage job

Needmorelego · 25/06/2024 18:20

@TheHeadOfTheHouse well yes that's different circumstances.
But you don't get carers unless you are actually caring for someone which is generally more hard work than most jobs.

Needmorelego · 25/06/2024 18:25

@TheHeadOfTheHouse £327.60 Carers Allowance is MONTHLY.
Minimum wage (35 hours a week) is £396.90 WEEKLY.
So MONTHLY is that x4 - £1587.60.

You’re misunderstanding.

when you work full time, you don’t get housing benefit, council tax benefit etc and all the other stuff I listed above.

you have to pay it all out of your wage.

claim carers allowance and you get it all paid for.

thats what I mean when I say its the equivalent of a minimum wage job.

and what you’re left with after everything is no different from working minimum wage to claim carers allowance and all the other benefits.

a number of people in my family claim carers allowance for people who don’t actually need a carer, they just have an entitlement for one due to the benefit they’re on, but they manage fine without one.

without elaborating on this, but I know someone who claims carers allowance for a family member who’s child is entitled to one. The parent can’t claim is as they earn too much, so in exchange for claiming the carers allowance for their child, they have agreed to do the parents ironing for it every week.

no caring duties done by the carer, just the weekly ironing in exchange for all the benefits listed in my previous post.

same with another family member, they get the carers allowance for their grandson as their mum can’t claim it and they have given it to her so she can give up work as she was finding it hard as she was getting older.

both “carers” on minimum wage have now given up their jobs and are no worse off.

Needmorelego · 25/06/2024 18:54

@TheHeadOfTheHouse report them then if it bothers you that much.
As I said - I get Carers but the amount is nowhere near a full time job - but I can't do a full time job because I am a carer.
I'm not entitled to anything else (except child benefit).

Your circumstances are different as you live with a partner who works.

the people I know live on their own.

it doesn’t bother me what other people do, I’ve no intention of reporting them, but as always with threads like this, people are very naive.

Needmorelego · 25/06/2024 18:59

@TheHeadOfTheHouse as I said it is different if they are single.
Carers Allowance is still an insulting amount though.
I am grateful for it obviously - but it is an insult.

It is an insulting amount if you have to give up work and can’t claim any other help.

its ruins your earning potential too and career

"I was asking if I can claim carers for dd8 as I do all the things she won't let anyone else do ie dressing, bathing and night needs."

Sounds like being a parent to me. So OP you can do all that but can't cook or take your own meds?

No I can't. I don't remember to take the meds and I forget there's food on so run the risk of setting fire to the house. Also can't be around knives due to intrusive thoughts. But yep it's like parenting because I am a parent 🤷🏻‍♀️ if you dont like the thread stop judging and move on.

This is were the benefit system is wrong.

how the hell can some one claim carers for someone, when they have a carer themselves?

🙄

There are so many people doing this. Multiple disabled people in families claiming carers for each other.

Crokepark · 25/06/2024 22:34

How do you care effectively for an 8 year old if you have such serious issues as forgetting that food is cooking?

Because her older daughter cares for her mum and sorts that stuff out?

But you don't forget you are looking after a vulnerable child? Seems very odd to me. Also it seems like your eldest daughter is doing a lot of the caring for your youngest if she's cooking etc. Maybe she should get the carers allowance for you both.

happyhemsby · 26/06/2024 13:35

@GoogleWhacking well yeah when a child's screaming out for you it's hard to forget really isn't it?
Why are you questioning and judging me? And you can't claim carers allowance for multiple people. Maybe educate yourself on the matter before questioning!
