Tax refund 23/24

Waitingforsummer75 · 12/06/2024 19:07

My son started work in November last year and didn't earn anywhere near the tax threshold before April. He was put on a tax code that meant he paid tax from day one (week one tax code?) so he was expecting a refund.
His online HMRC account shows as pending, does anybody have any idea how long it may take?
TIA

He's on PAYE and still with the same employer?
What's his tax code this year?

Waitingforsummer75 · 12/06/2024 19:12

He is, 1257l this year

Has he put in a Self-Assessment for 23-24?

I retired end of April 23, so only earned one months wage last year, I’m not drawing my pension, so should be due all my tax back from that month. Mine is also pending. They don’t hurry to give it you back do they?

No, this is his first job. No need for SA

Thank you, that gives me hope it will come eventually. He tried phoning and was told to wait!

I think it can take quite a while - months.

Do you get the NI back too? DD is in a similar boat and I just can’t work it out of you only pay NI over the threshold or right from 0 earnings.

I remember being told by HMRC that it will definitely be looked at by October.
