thnk am too late to do online as money has to be in today... otherwise was going to do smile as would like ethical... will just get something and transfer it at some point.

I opened a Barclays Tax Haven one. You can prob do it until midnight over the phone possibly.

I believe that if you open a cash ISA today that you will be able to later convert it to a shares ISA, though obviously you will have the lower limit rather than the £7k limit if you choose a shares one. So you could open a cash ISA online with your exisiting bank and still be able to choose a different shares one next week or at some point in the future.
