Child benefit claim

Hi all

I have just become a single parent. Still living with partner who is a high earner so we don’t currently claim any child benefit.

house is on the market and we are hoping for a very quick sell. sadly as we haven’t been living here long we have a lot of penalties to pay plus the mortgage so won’t take much from the sale.

I need to start getting all the money I can together as DD is only 6.5 months and I’m technically still on maternity leave although my payments stopped sometime ago.

as I am still living with partner who is a high earner is it best not to start any child benefit claims
until we seperate fully and house is sold?

As far as I'm aware it's based on household income, regardless of relationships or future plans. So yes you would need to wait until you're living separately. However they will back date a claim up to 3 months.
