Hi all,

im looking for a bit of advice. Im going to start working for my husband who’s self employed, part time. I’m currently unemployed as I’ve been looking after our toddler for the last couple of years but I feel I need to get back to doing something/anything again to regain some sanity. My husband has recently become very busy so I’m looking to start helping him out. He was going to just pay me directly as it’s going to be about £200 a week so not over the personal allowance but then someone mentioned that would be a stupid thing to do as he’d still be paying tax on it ect. He’s never employed anyone before and I’ve only ever worked for companies. How do we go about setting this up. I’ve looked online but all seems very confusing. Thanks

If he's going to employ you then he needs to do it properly and set up records with HMRC etc. There are a couple of starter pieces of info from HMG here:

You'd be better off as registering as self employed and invoicing him for work completed.
