debt collection letters for someone else

I received a letter today. Haven't opened but postbox and postcode indicate it's a debt collection agency. Held letter against the lamp (have not opened). Looks like they are chasing for a repayment of 9k. it's addressed to someone who never lived here (I bought the house as a new built 20 years ago). What would you do? I am not sure. send the letter back with 'not at this address'. open it and ring them? check my credit score...

I've had this a few times and always opened it and rung the debt collection agency. They will normally just update their records and you won't be bothered again. I've never left it as I don't fancy baliffs at my door!

Thanks, may do that.

As Puppylucky says, open the letter and tell debt company not anyone at your address.

And ignore anyone who posts to say it's illegal to open. They are wrong.
