Just a continuation of the previous one before it fills up!

@IKnowAristotle what I do is I have a category called tickets and hotels because we live in the sticks and generally have to stay over when we see stuff. I like to keep that topped up to £400. We are also very lucky that we have a really good small local venue so I stick £5 a week into a fund for those tickets if that makes sense. If I spend more than that I top it up from the tickets and hotels category.

Last month has been unusual with getting two sets of 'big' tickets... normally it is £5 or £10 a time 🤣🤣

We don't have a holiday as such though... just loads of mini breaks instead

In other news I'm getting better at reconciling my accounts 🤣🤣 first time! 🥳

@IKnowAristotle - I don't think you can actually delete categories, or if you can then you have to reallocate all spending from those categories into something else.

I'd either rename them or hide them. This video might help:

Yay! Well done. And did you do your reconciliation dance?? 💃🏼

@QueenMabby absolutely!

Thanks @HouseofHolbein & @QueenMabby for the advice.

I think the way forward is to hide the categories I've created (and spent) then make a general gigs category.

I've spent some time this morning making sure my budget as good as it can be to see me through to the end of the year. In January I want to set out some longer term goals and plan appropriately.

HouseofHolbein · 01/11/2024 10:01

@IKnowAristotle make sure there is no money in your hidden categories otherwise it will screw up future months. Voice of experience here 🤣🤣

As an alternative to hiding the categories you could just rename them to reflect what you want them to be? I've done that before 😊

I've definitely spent the money 😁 what gigs have you got planned? I've just got tickets for Alanis Morrisette and Manic Street Preachers next year.

HouseofHolbein · 01/11/2024 13:31

Got Skindred in about a week, slipknot in December Elvana in march and at a festival in April 🤣🤣 Ghost in April and Simply Red in October. Plus loads of cover bands and small local bands too.

Hope you don't mind me saying but Simply Red seems to stand out on that list! I've seen slipknot way back when.

I have been using YNAB for many years and it has worked very well for me. however, I am still using the old Classic version. As I say, it works well for me. But I am intrigued and an also a bit confused by the discussion on this thread - presumably every one is using the newer version?

In short, is it worth making the change? I would be grateful for advice/opinions.

Thank you

Hi, me again 😁
I'm sure I read somewhere that if you sign up directly with YNAB it works out cheaper than through Apple (which I have stupidly done!) and that if someone refers me, they and I get a month free- does anyone know anything about this and, if I'm not making it up, would anyone like to pm me a code please?!

Email their customer services and they can sort you out with the referral and the pricing.

You can't buy the classic version any more. I think all of us started after they stopped selling it so probably can't compare with the older version. If you look on the Reddit page for YNAB there are some older users on there who have done threads about the pros and cons.

It is quite expensive now so may be worth sticking with what you have but I'm not sure what the exact differences are that would make the change.

BertieBotts · 02/11/2024 00:19

Also, stealing from the future isn't really an issue any more as it brings up a huge warning about it. I'd say the next month category isn't hugely necessary, it used to be recommended by people who were used to the old version, but I don't think it's really relevant without that.

There are way more controls on the desktop version than the app. And ignore what the tutorial tells you to do because auto assign is not a good feature for beginners to use.

I have a varied taste in music 🤣🤣 and simply red has always been on my wish list. Husband saw them in 1992 and says it was amazing.

Went to a band last night ended up very moshy I wasn't taking part but am covered in bruises 🤣🤣 and deaf this morning

@HouseofHolbein eclectic is good!

I need a little bit of help again. Today I spent money on a train card - assigned it to the correct category but already showing as overspent. My total spending in this category is showing as higher than my actual activity in that category. So I've spent £40 but it's showing as £90 (roughly). I also think I've not assigned enough money even though it's showing as fully assigned. Any ideas of what I need to be checking to resolve? I'm worried it'll happen in other categories if I've done something fundamentally wrong.

flipent · 04/11/2024 15:38

@IKnowAristotle Have you checked last month?

I've been caught out before, where an 'over spend' on the last day of the month gets missed. So I've accounted for the money, but in the wrong month as far as YNAB thinks.

IKnowAristotle · 04/11/2024 15:56

Thanks @flipent - no overspend and I had money roll over. I've attached a photo of what I'm seeing. I've had to add money into this category to cover it but I don't understand where overspend has come from as the pure figures dont add up to an overspend.

@IKnowAristotle I may be looking in the wrong place, but I can't see an over spend.... 36.69 carried over and 50.31 assigned = 87. Spent 47.80 leaving 39.20 over?

HouseofHolbein · 08/11/2024 09:29

Just done my Friday reconciliation. All good first time 👍 once I am more confident that I'm keeping up with stuff I will do it a bit less often.

Yes, this is what is confusing me as I have funded that category by £134.80 as it was initially showing as overspent. I don't understand the difference in the figures. On my progress bar, it's shows I've spent more than I actually have.

As I said, I'm new to it so not expecting everything to be perfect.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 17/11/2024 14:55

OK, I have a question. I have some money in an ING account, I use it to save a little bit because it´s easier not to spend it if it´s not in my main account and I have to actually do a transfer to access it iyswim.
Anyway, I have the ING account in YNAB but it has meant that what I was thinking of as separate isn´t. I thought my categories were funded AND I had the savings, but without the ING money I don´t have enough to fund everything, if that makes sense. Going forward I want any money in ING not to be counted in YNAB, so can I now just "close" the ING account in YNAB, so the money in there isn´t taken into account for my budget?

QueenMabby · 17/11/2024 15:06

You could add a "savings" category to your budget and have that assigned amount equal to your ING balance so that money can't be assigned anywhere else by accident. We do this for our emergency fund.

Or, if you want to be able to see it but not have it as part of your budget at all then you could move it off budget and have it as a "tracking" account.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 17/11/2024 15:11

Thanks! Can i just change the account type to tracking then or will that mess things up?

QueenMabby · 18/11/2024 09:00

I'm not sure. I've never tried it!
