Thanks for the new thread! I've got an expensive few months coming up so grateful to YNAB for making it manageable. It's still going to be tight but much better than if I wasn't using it.

BertieBotts · 21/05/2024 10:11

@MissOrganisedMe I think this happens when you subscribe through your phone's app store, rather than directly with YNAB. I think it's more expensive this way, as Google take a cut, so you should at the least cancel the subscription with Google (this will allow it to run until your currently paid period ends but will not renew the payment) and then if you want to continue with YNAB, sign up through their website using a credit card. It gets charged in dollars so the price fluctuates a bit but there is no processing fee to Google that way.

Just allocated my monthly amounts into my categories today, and managed to put £405 into savings for one of my long-term goals. 🤑👍

BG2015 · 21/05/2024 21:49

How much is YNAB these days, not used it for a long time but used to love it.

Depending on the exchange rate, £78-80-ish

Thanks

Been away for a concert, able to tap tap tap my card comfortably because I know I've the money built up in my spending money category, electricity bill bi monthly is due to go out too and fuel card payment went out on Monday, in the past a night away would have filled me with dread because of the spends and also with direct debits coming out I'd have been scrambling with money. YNAB has taken all this away & separating from my exh helped too as the only one spending from my account is me.

BG2015 · 22/05/2024 19:57

I've jumped back in and started a months trial but now I've totally forgotten what to do with it. I think I need to go and watch some videos again.

I've set some targets for when I get paid next week,I remember that bit.

My motivation now is to start really sorting my money out properly. I've just paid the mortgage off, now I'm looking at retirement in the next 2 years so I want to put that mortgage payment into a savings account instead of frittering it away. I could potentially save £9k a year.

I've just hit 97 days for age of money 😊 June is fully funded and I have money saved for my trip away. Started topping up July.

Eager to get paid on Wednesday so that I can begin assigning money

flipent · 24/05/2024 14:04

I'm 5 months into my YNAB journey and I just wish I'd heard about it sooner!

I'm saving a fortune and my money stress is down because I know everything is covered.

I honestly don't know how I was coping before. Having money saved for the annual bills has built up so quickly and I now have no idea how I was managing them with nothing saved.

I've already got a third of a month's salary sitting in my easy access saver which is all allocated... having lived pay check to pay check for far too long I'm so happy!

Lazydaisydaydream · 24/05/2024 15:07

Thanks for the new thread!

pay day today and within about five minutes all the money was allocated and I felt absolutely broke again haha. I love scrolling through the categories though and seeing rhe money building up.

as I’m only a few months in, there are a few things I’m realising I needed to prioritise, like one of our cars needs to be taxed this month but there isn’t enough money in that category yet so will need to WAM it. I can’t wait until I’ve been using YnAB for a year and feel like I actually know what my true expenses are (although I am sure there will still be surprises!)

You were probably reactive with your bills, YNAB is more proactive, it's going to happen, plan for it, whereas prior to YNAB it was just fighting the nearest fire?

I took dd to a curly hairdresser yesterday for first time €110, I had a haircare category for her but it didn't have much in it because she rarely got her haircut. I can save a bit on the products I bought yesterday but need to factor this in for the future, I WAM from ds haircut category because he's currently letting it grow Grin Before this would have been a huge expense now I'm just thinking set the goal and let YNAB take care of it.

The longer you're at it the less time it takes to assign the money, I'm a little Sad about moving to monthly pay as less YNAB budgeting Grin but excited as I'll be budgeting a months expense at a time too and might be able to get a month ahead

Oh Absolutely, but the amount of money I have and I'm spending has only gone up - but just having YNAB means I've got 'spare' money. It's all allocated, but the cash is in my control ready for the needs rather than running down everything and waiting for pay day - hoping there is enough to make it.
Not living hand to mouth is liberating!

Happierwithouthim · 24/05/2024 16:39

My peers scoff at the idea of using an app for budgeting but I love being able to search and find how much x cost me or when I bought it or how long something has lasted

Payday yesterday. I bizarrely woke up at midnight when the money came in and at 12.07am it was all gone again. 😂I'm also feeling very broke but also at 38 days for age of money and 43 days buffer.

I'm not coping very well with my payday being changed. It was nice when we both got our main pay on the same day, and I could allocate mostly everything at once, with child benefit/side hustles picking up the drips and drabs. I think if we can get to the point where I can fully fund 6 weeks ahead when my partner gets paid in the middle of the month I will be able to work it out much better. Something to aim for!

I've got a sinking fund set up for school holidays and back to school, plus a Christmas fund I can "borrow" from. Unheard of!

QueenMabby · 25/05/2024 07:55

Hi all, can I join? We've just downloaded our YNAB free trial and spent an hour last night setting up categories and linking our bank accounts.

DH and I are already pretty savvy budgeters but we do it all in Excel and that's frustrating as I'm not much of a laptop user and I do most of the spending! Plus with dc1 about to go to university and some changes ahead I really wanted to drill down on the budgeting as I suspect we've allowed lifestyle creep to take over a bit and are not saving as much as we could.

DH loves his excel spreadsheets though so has taken some persuading.

He gets paid on 25th of each month and I get paid on 27th but we don't use that money until 1st so it will already be a few days old before we allocate it. It'll be interesting to see how it works starting YNAB so close to the end of a month.

We have a lot of separate bank accounts for different things so it might be complicated to start with but we'll see how we go.

Thanks for reading all that brain dump!

HouseofHolbein · 29/05/2024 08:42

Good luck @QueenMabby! I've fiddled around with how I use YNAB the longer I've used it and the more I trust it if that makes sense?

I used to have loads of savings pots now I have 2 - one for future essential expenses and one for savings pots.

I have 2 current accounts - one for bills and one for everything else.

I could cut it down to one but I like the separation tbh.

Anyway I just checked my budget and I have hit 100 days age of money! Doesn't really mean a lot 🤣🤣 but it feels like something I should be happy with.

Queen welcome aboard! I think you'll love the functionality of YNAB and the app is so handy on your phone. The only time I really take a break from it is holidays where I transfer my money to Revolut if it's not already there and just spend from there on whatever, actually came back with money last year.
