Just had the dreaded bank text message to tell me how much money I don’t have left!!!

I don’t get paid till 25th and I’ve got 350 left. Partner has about the same. Doesn’t feel like much of a life for two people both working hard in full time jobs. Everything is just so bloody expensive

just having a whinge

OP posts:

This month has been a killer, my daughters 21st and husbands bday within 2 days of eachother, plus a vet bill which was unexpected. I've got £120 left which is for fuel and a bit of food (joint account pays for most of our food shop so may just need to top it up once that runs low) and I also need a new tyre! I may have to borrow a little from my husband 😬 life is so bloody expensive!

WoodBurningStov · 08/05/2024 08:27

I get paid the last Friday of the month, which means this month has the latter part of April's direct debits come out of this pay packet and a full 31 days in May. I've got about 31 pence left, but a ta leats all the bill are paid

Aposterhasnoname · 08/05/2024 08:45

Jesus Christ are you serious, £700 for two weeks food and fuel for two people and you think that’s tight! Where are you eating, the Ritz?

JaninaDuszejko · 08/05/2024 09:04

Where are you eating, the Ritz?

To be fair, £25 per person per day would really not get you much at the Ritz.

Miloandfreddy · 08/05/2024 09:11

This is a typical thread where everyone follows the leader and gives the OP a hard time. I personally am by no means rich but I wouldn't like to be left with £350 until the end of the month so I totally get where you're coming from: it doesn't leave much if you have an emergency bill to pay. Times are tough.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 08/05/2024 09:12

I’ve just had to pay £700 odd for the dentist and have another £600 coming up to stop my poor teeth cracking… stress, what stress?

I know it's not a race to the bottom but it does feel a bit insensitive at the moment

Yep. OP has far more than most

InterestQ · 08/05/2024 10:06

£350 isn’t that much. While it’s more than some people, one big bill, a leak, a storm that blows down a fence panel or a tree down on to something, a stuck key in a broken lock, a prang on a roundabout with a careless driver, an issue with a car and it’s gone!

if it was absolutely ring fenced for food and petrol only, great, but life isn’t that kind unfortunately. Everyone saying it’s bragging is just being silly.

Whattodo112222 · 08/05/2024 10:18

Think you're luckier than most OP. I'm a single parent who has a relatively good job and I have £260 to last me until the 23rd! I'd love to have £700 between 2 of us after all bills have been paid.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 08/05/2024 10:26

A bit of a mean post - there's tens of thousands of people who would love to have that to last a couple of weeks. If you're both earning loads and you think this isn't enough to have left perhaps try to budget like us poor folk do!

mondaytosunday · 08/05/2024 10:29

I'm already overdrawn this month due to a couple unexpected expenses and will have to cancel my car getting serviced next week. Need the MOT, and of course the car insurance is also due!
Going on holiday (tickets booked and paid for) end of June and looks like I'll be overdrawn that month too. No partner to help cushion anything.

CKL987 · 08/05/2024 10:40

This is not the place to come posting that you have £700 for food, fuel an fun. Many people don't have that for 2 months of food and fuel and there is definitely no fun. Do you never read any other posts?

Starlight1979 · 08/05/2024 10:42

£700 for 2 weeks?! Are you having a laugh?!

Come on OP, I get that might be tight for you but read the room... There are people on here and irl who live on less than that every single month.

Ariela · 08/05/2024 10:54

I suggest minimise on food.

Once a month or so, I take a good long look at what's in the fridge, freezer and on the shelves, and plan a few days meals, meaning other than milk and maybe bread if I don't make some I simply don't need to shop for food.

For example I know I've some left over bacon, loads of cheese and some mushrooms past their best. I'll add a tin of tomato to those and that will make a large pasta bake, which I'll cook in the oven same time as tonight's dinner (so no cooking cost for our ready meal for later in the week).

With the greatest of respects, most people don't have spare money each month just in case a fence panel comes down or they crash their car!

loropianalover · 08/05/2024 11:07

OP if you’re up for it will you do a breakdown of what the £700 will cover for the next 2 weeks!

I do understand everyone else’s comments and yes it’s more than a lot of people would have but as OP said they are a hard working couple etc. and things are just so expensive nowadays it never feels like you get your value for money anymore. A working couple might like a weekend away, you might be needing some new work clothes, you might have a family event, etc. I can see how £700 will just evaporate.

But most don't have money for things like that. They just don't get fixed.

food fuel and maybe a bit of fun!

You have loads then. You could easily manage on half of that

Moier · 08/05/2024 11:17

My friends husband walked put on her just after she had her leg amputed.. said he was going for a loaf of bread and some milk. Took bank card and withdrew their last £200. Sent text to say he was leaving her for someone else.My friend is waiting for benefits.. she has/ had £50..
She would be so happy in your situation.
Luckily I'm very rich( due to compensation ) and gifted her a thousand pounds.. even though she never asked and keeps saying she will pay me back.
I think OP you need to take a step back.. get over yourself and think before you post

Badburyrings · 08/05/2024 11:34

Sometimes you just need to read the room OP. Very poor taste post during the COL crisis and many families suffering from chronic poverty.

BlastedPimples · 08/05/2024 11:43

Op, you're fine. £700 for two weeks?

Melonbraun · 08/05/2024 11:47

Apologies if I’ve upset anyone it was my intention. How do you delete a post?
