Tax code changed

Can anyone suggest reasons or is going through similar?

My tax code for years has been 1254L. This month it has changed to 514L and my tax has almost doubled. I have been with the same employer for 15 years and nothing has changed.

I have tried to get through to HMRC but the phones weren't working on Friday. I will try again this week. I have asked my employer and they said ask HMRC. I have been on my personal tax account and it is less than enlightening, no reason for tax code changing, just a record of previous codes.

There should definitely a breakdown of your tax code on your personal tax page of government gateway. Mine has changed as I owe tax on savings.

Have you taken out a salary sacrifice last year, or have a benefit in kind such as a company car?

Do they have you down as having another income?

Bumblebeeinatree · 28/04/2024 18:16

Could be savings. I always owe them money due to savings, very annoying.

Have you had a child benefit tax charge last year that has been taken via an adjustment in this year's tax code?

As PP said, the explanation will be on your PAYE gateway page

That's a big loss, in tax code terms. What does it say online. Phone them Monday.

Ok so finally found the right bit on the tax website. It had me as having £7000 non coded income.
I know this will be due to me previously having self employed income but I haven't earned on that for 2 years. I have updated the income and also did my tax return for last year - hopefully one of these will sort it.

Thank you!

Well now it's updated again to 400LX and they are saying that I have underpaid tax in a previous tax year (but don't say which one!). FML
Still can't get through on the phone.

And I was given a £4 repayment on my self assessment calculation for the tax year just gone! I am very confused.
