Maternity Allowance question

Hello!

I got made redundant at the end of December, so I'm about to start the process of applying for maternity allowance.

Can anyone who has been through this process answer a quick question for me?

Once you have formally applied, assuming it's approved, do you get to choose the date the maternity allowance starts, or does it start automatically from whichever date they approve it or decide they want it to start?

I've read it can take up to 35days, so I want to apply sooner rather than later, but baby isn't due until 6th May, so I don't actually want it to start until around 22nd April. I've had a Google but I can't seem to find an answer on when it kicks in.

Thank you!!
