Octopus Smartmeter

Anyone got one? Had any issues? I have been resisting a smart meter for a long time, but it seems Octopus are offering incentives to have one. Have held off so far, but are smartmeters now established enough not to cause issues now? Anyone changed companies from Octopus and found the smartmeter caused a problem? TIA.

Ooh. Excited to see this thread and marking my place, as I am in the same boat.

Held off for years, and still cautious, although I understand they have now got past the problem that you can't change suppliers with a smart meter ?

But am being told my current meter is past it's 'use by' date so would love to hear other people's experiences.

I'd love to find out but there's no space on my area to fit one and hasn't been for about a year now. I guess they are short of installers.

MagpiePi · 15/01/2024 16:04

I got one fitted late last year after putting it off for ages, only for it to not work because there isn't a good enough signal, so actually a waste of time. You would have thought they would have checked before fitting.

I’ve had one 2 years Not a single issue since it was installed.

That's an interesting article @WuTangGran . Thanks all. My wifi signal isn't great, despite Zen saying it's the dog's bits, so that might be an issue, among a few. Including my meter switching to Welsh it seems! Grin

Octopus insisted on changing our almost brand new meters to theirs. A whole morning of gas and electric meters changed and the smart meter didn't work. Two weeks of daily phone calls to the customer services telling me to turn it on and off until I asked for someone to call round. The engineer came and gave me a new smart meter but told me it wouldn't work and left. My only option is to have them install new meters again to see if the connection with the smart meter would work. Such a waste of time and products.

I've got one & I've had no problems with it at all. It was here when I moved in & I had it changed to Octopus a while later - that was 6 years ago.

Soozikinzii · 15/01/2024 16:46

We've got one. No issues at all . We join in the saving sessions - but only earned about £5 in points over all .

closingdownsale · 15/01/2024 16:49

Same as pp's - engineer finishes installing one and then told me it would work as my meter cupboard was too far away from my flat to get a signal

Carriemac · 15/01/2024 21:25

My octopus smart meter has been a nightmare for 2 years . I'm rural and it's the phone signal not the WiFi I think?

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 15/01/2024 21:34

Interesting, thanks. @Soozikinzii can i ask over what period of time you earned the £5 in points? I'm thinking a while maybe?

I am rather sick of getting down practically on my belly to read the gas meter every month though. I looked into getting it moved a while ago, and they wanted about 11billion quid, so every month I get down, then spend half an hour getting up again.

Octopus are rubbish. We changed to Octopus, they put in a new smart meter, we got onto their Agile tariff, all worked well for about a month then stopped working. Had numerous engineers come out, new meters etc installed, nothing worked, we were back on their normal more expensive tariff. Then Octopus informed us that our area hasn't yet been commissioned for their smart meters so it will never work. No explanation as to why it worked for a month. Complained to the Ombudsman, got £30 compensation, waste of time.

It is the phone signal with mine too.

Spottyvases · 25/06/2026 08:23

Anyone else got a smart meter that works in a poor mobile phone signal area? We have good broadband connection - if that is more relevant now

Spottyvases · 25/06/2026 08:24

Dithering about whether to get smart meter put in.

MumofCandR · 25/06/2026 22:53

Have one with octopus for 3 years, works well no issues. You get a screen which shows immediate use and an app. We like it.

Lincslady53 · 26/06/2026 10:57

We switched to Octopus in January, from BG. Had a smart meter installed as we were buying an EV and need one to get the EV tariff. Had no problems so far, but we didn't get a smart meter and was told the app does the same. Up to now, the app shows what we have used and what we have paid fine. We get a monthly bill which is 30odd pages long showing usage and charges in 30 minute intervals, which we don't print. Really pleased with the service, but you have reminded me, I must give them a call re live usage data. Our mobile signal in the area is weak, in fact we get no mobile signal indoors.

Malbecfan · 29/06/2026 21:19

We got a smart meter in January from Octopus and live in a rural area with only one mobile phone provider. It works fine.

There was loads of hassle getting it put in due to National Grid being lying inept arseholes. Octopus staff were awesome - the photos they took before they started were the clincher in getting NG to back down. It took 3 visits from them but the staff could not have been nicer or kinder. On the final visit, he left the power on as long as possible so 90yo DF could carry on listening to his music.

We have electric storage heaters in parts of our property so we needed assurances that they would still work. To be fair to Octopus, the switch has been fine and the app makes things very easy. I also take advantage of the freebies!
