Energy company claims I’m £500 in debt with prepaid meters???

Left our energy company after moving house last month and they have sent us a letter saying we are £500 in debit.

This is beyond ridiculous as we have been on prepayment meters the entire time (8years) and so it is impossible to use electricity or gas that we have not paid for.

I am honestly shocked that this mistake could have been made! Does anyone have advice?

call them up and challenge it? surely that's the obvious step.

Is it an old debt?

This happened to my DD.

Phone and challenge it.

Their billing systems are chaotic sometimes.

@Al991 sorry but is this a rental you moved out of?? i am a landlord and it is a nightmare dealing with electricity company. an empty flat had a standing charge debt of 220 and after 7 hours(yes 7 hours) on the phone i was told to take the new key to shop and put money on the key and put it in the meter. they have since been sending debt collection letters. after sending all receipts to the ?boss at the company they are still sending letters even though they admit I have already paid the debt!! I am actually looking forward to them taking me to court cos I and my husband are totally pissed off with them. then i discovered if i left it to the tenants to inform the electricity companies when they move in that previous standing charge debt is just written off!!! I have always paid it off but no more! the debt is more likely to belong to a previous tenant before you took over the last rental or this rental! just fight it.

Had this (not so much as £500 though!) with Scottish Power a few years ago and challenged it. When they reviewed they decided they owed me money and sent a cheque.

Still baffled at their explanation of how pre payment meters work…
