Lots of people recommend You Need A Budget but personally I really couldn't get on with it. Despite spending my work life immersed in spreadsheets I've always preferred good old fashioned pen, paper and calculator.

I have a 'finances book' with a double page for each month. Everything gets written down every month with totals, including savings. I'm a big fan of Monzo pots for separating all my money out.

For me, it's important to be able to quickly grab my book when I want to check or add something without fiddling with a spreadsheet or app.

Anyway, point being, look at recommendations but it's more important to pick one that works for you which might not be the most recommended.
