Copyright issues with race night DVD?

Our pre-school is a charity, and we're thinking of holding a race night to raise much-needed funds. We've been lent a DVD with some races on - are we allowed to play it or are there copyright/performance issues?

The tickets would be sold in advance, so you could argue it would be a private party rather than a public performance. If anyone could tell me whether we're OK to go ahead, or if it's a bit sticky, I'd be really grateful. We can't afford a massive legal bill!

Many thanks

It sounds like it would be a copyright issue. The fact that tickets are being sold means that copyright permission is needed for whoever filmed the original races.

I suppose it is a copyright issue but would anyone really follow it up?

When we did one it was billed as 'Fish and Chip supper with entertainment' rather than a racenight and that seemed to do the trick.

NB I am not a copyright lawyer!
