If I had £1253.81 and I needed to remove 55p from every pound of that, what would I be left with please? I'm getting differing answers 😫

i think you just need to go on a universal benefit calculator!

£1253.81*.45 = 564.21?

Presumable it's only on whole pounds? £1253 x £0.55 = £689.15 to be taken off. £1253.81 - £689.15 = £564.66
Or
£1253.81 x £0.55 = £689.60 so £1253.81 - £689.60 = £564.21

There is only one answer, but two ways you can understand it:

100-55=45, so you are left with 45% of the money.

£1253.81 x 0.45 is 45% = £564.21

Or you could work out 55% which is £1253.81 x 0.55 = £689.60
Then work out £1253.81 - £689.60 = £564.21
