Student loan over payment

Itstime2023 · 27/11/2023 10:38

Was looking into this.
Is it just for the previous two tax years?

For example when I went back to uni I was working part time but still paying student loan then from my previous course. I hadn't thought about the fact I might not have needed to pay....

Just wondering if anyone knows before I spend hours in a queue trying to speak to someone...

Thank you

I recently reclaimed. I don't believe there's a time limit, my claim went back to 2018.

You can claim back for any years where for that whole tax year you didn't earn over the threshold (past thresholds are listed on the govt website).

I called around 3pm and queued on the phone for 20 mins, actual phone call took 2 minutes, they can easily see on their system if you've overpaid in any tax year. I received a £500ish refund a few days later. It was really easy.

They looked all the way back for me when I asked last year

You can also reclaim via their official Twitter account. I think I got about £700 including years where I was working PT and then also a period of MAT leave

@BlueWhale47 thank you that's interesting. Have just logged into twitter. Is there something specific I'm looking for on student finance England? Or did you just comment.

@flowerygloves thanks I will give them a call if can't figure out twitter.

@Socathe did you need any kind of payslips or anything? Literally looked today and couldn't find anything.

I'm sure I called before but they said I wasn't eligible but this was a few years back, maybe they just didn't want to say that I was. I will try again, worth a shot. I'm sure I must have over paid during my second stint as a student.

Nope no payslips or anything like that needed. They know through the govt information how much you've earned each tax year and how much you've paid towards your student loan.

Sorry just seen this! Have you managed to sort it? I just sent them a DM and they asked a few questions and then got a payment a few days later :)

Interesting.

FortunaMajor · 01/12/2023 21:38

You need to set up an account on their website. Then contact them via twitter direct messages and ask them to check if you are due a "below threshold" refund. You can also call them. They will check your records back to when your loan first started. I got just over £1k back.

It might take a few hours between responses via DM, but it's usually sorted over the course of a day and at least you're not hanging on the phone for ages.

I filled in an online form and got an email 3 days later. Refund was a other 2 days
