For a while now I have been getting text messages from the an unknown number and for the last 2-3 weeks they are getting regular and going by the content I think it is somebody I know how do I trace the number or if I report it to the police can they trace the number. Help dont know what to do and it is starting to stress me out.

I would report it to the police and then block it.

happystory · 06/03/2008 10:52

But I think you mean it's coming through as 'no number' or 'private number' don't you? Therefore you can't ring them (not that you'd want to)

I would go the police for advice, it's not nice. Or ring your provider?

mishymoo · 06/03/2008 10:55

Ring your provider and ask them to block all incoming messages/calls.

I don't think that providers will block calls from certain numbers - they usually advise you to change your number. Which is a PITA but could be the only answer.

Is it coming up as "witheld" or similar? Its strange because its not usually possible to withold your number on a text message - certainly not as easy as it is for a phone call.

wackyraces · 06/03/2008 11:00

The number is coming up as it comes through with a text message and have rang it but just goes to voice mail, it is awful especially as going through a divorce so another added stress. Would the police be able to trace the person that is doing this?

kkept he messages, contact your service provider, give them the mobile number, ask which network this number is from, then contact them, then give police a call and give them all your info..if you know someone in mobile industry, they may give you the details of the person whose number it is!..>

MascaraOHara · 06/03/2008 11:01

Log it with the police and block the sender.. if you have times and dates of the texts your provider should be able to find the number they were sent from (even if they can't pass that info on to you)

Sounds horrible. I think you can also block all 'unknown' numbers

wackyraces · 06/03/2008 11:08

Will ring my provider and see what they say, have found out on the internet that the mobile number was registered in 1997 so if its a pay and go phone would the police still be able to trace the person who is sending these?

Oh excellent - who's your provider? Cos mine refused to block the number of someone who was calling me 40+ times a day and sending abusive messages, they told me it was change my number or nothing.

DualCycloneCod · 06/03/2008 13:18

wat do they say?

wackyraces · 06/03/2008 14:51

02 but I have got a samsung phone & you can block it in your settings apparently

Dual - telling me that I am not going to have any friends left by the time they have finished, and stop away from ***(ex b/f) otherwise your be sorry that sort of thing..past few days been getting up to 10 a day....

But I didnt know if they where threating enough for the police.
