So if i left my house in my will to my kids but left a thousand to each of my 5 godchildren but there was no cash, only the house, would the house have to be sold to honour this?

I would imagine your children would sort it out so that it didn't have to be, but you might want to talk to them about the situation. Do you especially want the house to be kept in the family? Let out? This has other implications and your children might not all agree on the best way forward (we have had this exact situatin in our family, where some siblings wanted to sell and others to keep the house). Easier if its spoken about beforehand.

OP, you need to set out clearly what you wish to happen to the property as @Outnumbered99 has explained. This is vital where you do not have £5k in cash to bequeath to your Godchildren.

I suggest legal advice, if you will a specific property and then move that part of the will fails. Much better to leave the grand children a flat rate and divide the rest of the estate as % to each child.

But presumably, as you say "kids" there is more than one of them, so either one will buy others out, or they will sell it and share the money between them, so then, they will have the money.
It seems unlikely that adult dc will want to live together.
I have to presume they are adult or you would be talking about trusts and things.

You can’t leave the whole house to someone and then cash you don’t have to someone else, much like you couldn’t leave a diamond ring you don’t have to anyone. If you want to leave cash gifts you must specify the house being sold to honour those then the remaining proceeds being split.
