Maternity leave and holidays.

Hi I’m a little confused about this.

I took a year maternity, last 3 months unpaid. Our holiday runs from 1st April till 31st March. I will be returning end of October this year. When I return I will be going from a 20hr a week contract to just 5 hrs but this contract change won’t happen till the end of October. From the 1st April till the end of October am I right in believing I have accrued holiday?

My hr department said I will have accrued 70hrs of holiday. I’m a bit confused as to whether I could use this before returning given that my contract will change quite dramatically and my holiday entitlement will reduce from my return till the end of March 2024.

I hope this makes sense? I effectively want to go on the books end of October still on my 20hr contract, take the 70 hrs I’ve built up in holiday then physically return on my 5hr contract.

You will have accrued hours on your old contract up until the date your hours are officially changed. Then it will be your new annual leave on top of that

I did this - returned to work nominally full time but used my annual leave to be part time for a few weeks, then switched my contract to part time. So definitely doable but will need your HR/ manager to agree and set your new contract start date appropriately.
