State Pension - Family Allowance - Historical NI Credits

Hi

I have received my Pension Forecast and it states that my National Insurance contributions stopped in 2010 (my Son was then 15/16).

He went on to study for a "A levels" and then to Uni. I had thought that I would be credited with NI contributions until he left education . On querying this with the NI people today they said that all NI credit/contributions stopped when a child reached the age of 16...

Please can someone clarify this for me as when I "Google it" it tells me something different - unless things have changed in in intervening years ??

Well mine stopped when my youngest turned 12... in 2019/20.
I can't even get through to ask. How did you manage that!!!

I thought they stopped at 12.

It used to be until 16 but been 12 for a few years. You might be able to pay to make up the missing credits from the last 6 years

@Gloxinia - Do you where this may be documented as I can find anything - only stuff relating to the new scheme which was introduced in 2010.

I don't think the fact that the wording has changed to describe this benefit as well ...

They stop at age 12 not 16.

I thought the whole point was that a child in further education doesn’t need a SAHP? Hence why dropping it to 12?

you can really expect to get credits for a state pension if you can go out to work!

I had always assumed that Family Allowance stopped when a child completed their formal education but it appears not by these responses.

Please enlighten me is Child Benefit a replacement for the old-fashioned Family Allowance ?? Not that any of this affects me anymore but would be good to know ...

Child benefit is still paid till the child leaves formal education but from what's been said here, it seems you don't get the pension payment credit after they turn 12.

@Changes17 Thank You - I thought that I was going crazy as all the searches that I made for "What age does child benefit stop" states 16 unless the child goes onto further education... although it makes no mention of pension payment credit information which is the bit that I really was trying to find out about.

the NI credits did used to be until 16 and it dropped to when they turn 12. Catches lots out.

Child benefit ( previously family allowance) is paid until a child leaves education. That isn't the same as NI credits being paid until a child leaves education though. I have only ever known that be done until the child is 12, but may have been different in the past.

Yep! 1977 - I thought I’d wandered into a time warp! I only hear my 80yo mum call it Family Allowance, and even at her age she had more CB years than FA!

You can check your individual National Insurance record here
If you have some years where it says that you have not paid enough, you can pay in some extra, however I believe that there is a limit on how far back you can go. State pension age is currently 66, then 67 or 68 depending on how old you are. So you may have the opportunity to work for some more years & pay NI or claim benefits depending on your own situation
