How much is your broadband?

MidnightMeltdown · 04/09/2023 15:37

I'm with virgin media and they are currently charging me £35 per month. My deal is ending next month and the renewal is £42 per month.

I phoned them and they offered to keep it at £35. However, they are cheeky fuckers as they are offering new customers the same deal for £26.50.

I'm thinking of moving to BT who offer faster broadband speeds for £30. I know that the price difference isn't huge, but the principle of it pisses me off.

Curious to know how much others are paying, and whether you move providers every time your contract ends, if anyone is willing to share.

29 a month, with talk talk.

changer2010 · 04/09/2023 15:44

£15 per month for BT's social tariff.

That's a similar offer to BT. How long have you been with them?

Wondering whether they hike the price once the contract ends

BT are absolutely price gouging us as the moment as we're out of contract. Thinking of switching to Virgin or Plusnet.

£23 fibre with origin

AuntieMarys · 04/09/2023 15:58

27 for sky

SootspriteSearcher · 04/09/2023 15:59

£25 with Now TV, been with them years. Always had good service so reluctant to move and have that stress of no Internet between switchovers.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 04/09/2023 16:04

£30 community fibre plus £10 for phone line and calls. Also includes a mesh system with 3 booster hubs.

Been with sky for years afraid to move as wfh as worried about the risk of issues.

Speed and coverage in the house is massively improved.

LegoCatLikesTuna · 04/09/2023 16:04

I flip between providers at every renewal, it's the only way to get the "new customer" prices. Currently paying £24 a month to virgin, but they also offered a £100 bill credit, so works out at less than £19 a month over the 18 months of the contract.

I use the broadband search thing on money saving expert to find the best deals!

That sounds like a good deal, esp. if they haven't sneakily tried to hike the price!

The only thing that stops me moving is worrying about having no internet during the move, as I wfh

What type of BB?

Fibre to the premises or just the cabinet?

QforCucumber · 04/09/2023 16:05

Just changed to Vodafone full fibre for £25 a month, been in 6 weeks and so far so good

I don't recommend Virgin. They will try to rip you off at every available opportunity.

I don't understand much about different types of broadband, but the one I currently have is 132mb ultrafast fibre broadband

Just tell Virgin you’re leaving and they will call you within 72 hours with an excellent deal.

This is what I'm tempted to do. Broadband providers seem to punish loyalty!

Are they any downsides? Is switching seamless, or do you end up with days of no internet in between?

Really? My Virgin bill has gone down every year since 2015. I tell them I’m leaving, they call back within 72 hours with a cheaper deal to make me stay. They have a whole retentions department; it’s their only job!

KnittedCardi · 04/09/2023 16:12

Bloody hell, we are paying £60 to Virgin just for BB. Having said that we have got a box right outside our house, and have speeds of 250+, so it's a good service. I do need to ring them though, because I saw if we fix a contract for another 18 months, that will come down to £50, but even so, they are complete wankers for charging us so much compared to others. I am assuming the really low prices are for basic services?

We have been with them our entire lives...... we had NTL which was taken over by Virgin, we had the box and phone for a while, but have ditched those, because we didn't need them anymore.

AutumnAnnie · 04/09/2023 16:12

@KnittedCardi same advice applies.

MyView2 · 04/09/2023 16:15

We are £20 a month with super speed Virgin. I finally got the option to drop our landline (that we never used) at last renewal time.

MortifiedSeptember · 04/09/2023 16:18

£29 with Bt but it is renewal time. I normally just call them up and ask for a deal. Then a a week later, I get a really good deal in my inbox. It is currently high because we moved house last year and I didn't have the power of haggling as well. But before that I used to pay £20 a month for fiber (I used to tell threaten to move to Now tv). It used to work a treat.

That sounds like fibre to the premises.

Gigaclear are very cheap round here but prices quoted, from under £20/month, are for BB only. Phone line (ie landline service) is an add on.

You may know that virgin is completely separate from all other broadband providers, in that they use a totally separate wire. This means when I recently switched from talktalk (which uses the (old BT) openreach wire) to virgin, I actually had two separate sets of broadband running at the same time for a few days. This was because I didn't cancel my talk talk contract quick enough so there was a few days overlap.

Next time when I move away from Virgin, the same thing will probably happen and I'll start a new Sky/Plusnet/BT whatever service, before I manage to cancel the virgin, so I'll have two at the same time!

If you are moving between two Openreach providers that are not virgin, then the switch is reasonably seamless. You might have a few hours without Internet, but you just need to unplug the old router and plug in the new one on a specific day and it should switch over.
