How much is your broadband?

I'm with virgin media and they are currently charging me £35 per month. My deal is ending next month and the renewal is £42 per month.

I phoned them and they offered to keep it at £35. However, they are cheeky fuckers as they are offering new customers the same deal for £26.50.

I'm thinking of moving to BT who offer faster broadband speeds for £30. I know that the price difference isn't huge, but the principle of it pisses me off.

Curious to know how much others are paying, and whether you move providers every time your contract ends, if anyone is willing to share.

Bloody hell, we are paying £60 to Virgin just for BB. Having said that we have got a box right outside our house, and have speeds of 250+, so it's a good service. I do need to ring them though, because I saw if we fix a contract for another 18 months, that will come down to £50, but even so, they are complete wankers for charging us so much compared to others. I am assuming the really low prices are for basic services?

We have been with them our entire lives...... we had NTL which was taken over by Virgin, we had the box and phone for a while, but have ditched those, because we didn't need them anymore.

£60 is extortionate!!

It doesn't surprise me though. This is what Virgin media do. They keep sneakily hiking the price and hoping that you're too busy to notice. They will probably be offering new customers the same deal for £30

£22 with Vodafone - I move every time the contract ends, zero loyalty. I wfh too and usually there’s no more than a couple of hours’ outage during which I either just take my lunch or tether from my phone.

Gribbit987 · 04/09/2023 16:29

Do you have a bt phone socket?

Most internet providers use the bt phone line to run internet. Virgin don’t. You may need a line installed and not all providers will take you on if this is the case - Nowtv wouldn’t take me on initially.

I change regularly and look for deal plus cashback. Have 2 lines as I need totally reliable service for work.

Talktalk: who I’ve just resigned with. I cancelled and they phoned and offered me £110 M&S voucher to resign for 12 months at current rate. Free uk phone calls and 152 mb/s internet for £28

Virgin: £45 cashback, £90 Amazon voucher and evening free uk calls with 132 mbps for £28.50. 18 month contract.

OldTinHat · 04/09/2023 16:29

£16.50 with Wightfibre, social tarriff.

Just tell Virgin you’re leaving and they will call you within 72 hours with an excellent deal.

I just tried that.

I'm currently paying £35 and my renewal deal is £42. I called them and they said that they could keep it at £35 for the renewal.

I pointed out that they are offering new customers £26.50 and that I could get a better deal by switching provider

Their response was, 'well you can keep changing providers, but then you will have all the hassle of changing provider every 18 months when your deal runs out'

Frankly, I think I would rather have the hassle of changing providers than be ripped off by virgin. I've been with them for 6 years and their service isn't particularly wonderful.

£29 with Bt but it is renewal time. I normally just call them up and ask for a deal. Then a a week later, I get a really good deal in my inbox. It is currently high because we moved house last year and I didn't have the power of haggling as well. But before that I used to pay £20 a month for fiber (I used to tell threaten to move to Now tv). It used to work a treat.

I'm thinking about moving to BT. Their current deals are 24 months, so even if they do put the price up, it won't be for another two years.

Yes I think so @Bromptotoo

Virgin have their own line (while I think that most other providers use the BT line). I'm not sure whether or not that makes it more complicated to change provider. I will ask BT

I don't have a phone line. Just a mobile.

Watch out on that front when I was with Talk talk, they hiked my prices by a few extra £ a month mid contract! Apparently they are allowed to do this!

whirlyhead · 04/09/2023 16:39

I dumped BT (who were rubbish) for Andrews and arnold who are wonderful. I’m on their top level gfast tariff, never have any issues with it and it’s super fast. It costs £65 a month but work pay for it so that’s fine.

they also answer the phone straight away when you call them which is amazing!

Agreed - was just about to say this.

I'm with Plusnet, around £24pm atm.

Whoever you change to;

  • see if you can get cashbock om Quidco or Topcash or similar.
  • see if a family member or friend has the service you are changing to and can give you a referral code so you both get cashback. If the provider does this but your don't know anyone who uses them them ask on here, I'll happily give referral codes for my suppliers to get the extra cashback.
MidnightMeltdown · 04/09/2023 16:41

Thanks @LegoCatLikesTuna this is good to know. I think I'm going call Virgin's bluff and switch provider.

I'm with Vodafone that use cityfibre cables. It's £35 but that's for 900mb.

It's a separate cable. We also have a virgin and BT cable connected but don't use them.

Vodafone are really good. Work from home rarely have issues.

feellikeanalien · 04/09/2023 16:46

I pay £23 with Sky. I was paying more and they were to going to hike it at the end of the contract. I phoned them before the contract ended and they came up with a fairly poor offer. It was only when I got on to the cancellation team to actually cancel that they gave me a good deal.

For some reason their cancellation team seem to have access to better deals.

Tequilamockinbird · 04/09/2023 16:49

I'm with BT, pay about £30 a month and it's fine for us.

Whichever one you go with, check Quidco first for cashback deals!

Don't make my mistake, and remember that you still need to give 30 days notice to cancel with virgin, so cancel with them first, then make sure the start date of your new contract only overlaps by a day or two. Then you definitely won't lose connection and won't be paying for two sets of broadband for too long.

There's an open reach socket downstairs which I think is BT. I have no idea how old it is or whether it still works, but I'll phone BT about that.

That's upped the stakes! I now expect. Virgin to offer me an Amazon voucher, cashback AND a £28.50 a month deal! 😂

Virgin media (fibre) £24 a month.

@LegoCatLikesTuna

Yes virgin did this too!! I was paying £28 until April, and then in May they hiked it to £35 mid contract!

I asked them about it on the phone earlier and they said 'well you could have called us for a better deal'. I hate it how they play games like this. They rely on the fact that most people are busy and stressed and don't have the time to be constantly monitoring and calling their broadband provider to avoid being ripped off.

Utility warehouse

Broadband and two mobile phones with unlimited everything £32.39

jay55 · 04/09/2023 17:04

£22 a month hyperoptic. I'm on the slowest of their speeds but it's more than enough for me. As I live alone and don't game online. I do stream loads though.

BT are absolutely price gouging us as the moment as we're out of contract. Thinking of switching to Virgin or Plusnet.

We found Plusnet didn't reach all the rooms in the house (1930s semi with soldi walls) and it was a bit slow.
We switched to Sky and it's been great, reaches all of the house and faster too. Not much more expensive too.

caerdydd12 · 04/09/2023 17:05

Are you a single adult household? If so, just have your partner/husband sign up for when your contract ends. Virgin define their a new customer by name, rather than address. My partner and I alternate each year between who will be the account holder so we get the "new customer" deals.

Sorry I mean if not* a single person household :)

MidnightMeltdown · 04/09/2023 17:07

Good advice thanks @Chasingsquirrels

I need to compare deals and decide who to switch to. I had been thinking BT initially, as I'll be switching to their line, and I want them to sort it out and make sure that it's working correctly.
