Mobile phone disconnection

I recently ran up a large mobile phone bill & can't afford the repayments EE are asking so my debt is being passed to a debt management company. My phone has been disconnected but does anyone know when my number will be allocated to someone else? I can still use it on WhatsApp which I like to use to keep in contact with family & friends but I'm unsure how long this will continue.

Can you buy a cheap PAYG SIM and ask for the PAC from EE to transfer your number to the PAYG SIM?

If you can get a PAC to port the number while owing debt to the original provider then that's the way to go.

A quick Google says debt is not a valid reason to refuse a PAC but how that works on the ground and after you've been cut off may be another thing.

They have refused to give me a PAC code until the debt is paid off which I think will take a year. Will my number be reallocated by then?
